Paul the Octopus’ final prediction has given hope to Spain today. With the Paul the Octopus final judgment that Spain will win, Paul the Octopus made the World Cup final set in stone. At the least, that looks to be the case considering the animal’s record. Somehow, this sea creature has become the oracle of the World Cup, as his bracket remains perfect thus far. Yet the Paul the Octopus final prediction could be more out on a limb, since the Germans are not involved anymore.
In Oberhausen, Germany, the English-born creature has become German soccer’s newest mascot. He has become the biggest expert of the World Cup, with his uncanny ability to predict winners by eating. In seven match thus far, he has not been wrong, which bodes ominously for whoever he doesn’t pick.
Yet Paul the Octopus’ final pick may be more difficult, because Germany is not playing. Beforehand, the prognosticator only predicted matches involving Germany, and today’s championship is between Spain and the Netherlands. However, Spain has already benefited from Paul’s foreshadowing.
Germans have mixed feelings about the octopus, since he predicted Spain would upset the Germans in the semifinals. He did foresee Germany rebounding in the third place match against Uruguay, so he has saved a little face. Still, thanks to him, Paul the Octopus’ final prediction is between Spain and the Netherlands, not Germany and the Dutch.
The new Nostradamus makes his picks just by eating a mussel, and not from analyzing stats. A treat is placed in two containers with a national flag on it, and whichever container Paul eats from will win the coming match. He ate from the winning container of every German match – although that included Serbia and Spain.
Because he figured out the Germans would lose early, many locals want today to be Paul the Octopus’ final match for good. Editorials in Germans newspapers called for Paul to be cooked, after he was right in picking Spain. But he was just reversing his pick from the 2008 European championship, when he picked the Germans to beat Spain and was wrong.
While Germany is mixed about their animal pundit, Spain has to feel more confident thanks to him. But the rest of the animal kingdom may be divided on the match. A ‘psychic bird’ in Malaysia has sided with Paul against the Dutch, while Singapore’s ‘Mani the Parrot’ is going against his peers and picking the Netherlands.
Paul the Octopus’ final pick will either make him perfect this year, or make Spain call for his head along with Germany. However, he was a perfect four-for-four in the 2008 European Cup, until he was wrong about Germany at the end. Perhaps his perfection is only good until the last match, which the Dutch hope is the case.
