Girls need to learn early that financial independence is important to their happiness and life in general. It is a parent’s job to teach their daughters how to achieve financial independence so they will be prepared to do so when they become full-grown adult women. Teaching your daughter this coupled with how to have healthy relationships with men will ensure that they will know exactly what they need to know as they begin to practice for life in their teen years.
Why it’s Important to Teach Girl’s Financial Independence:
Keeps her from being taken advantage of- Girls who have learned the importance of being financially independent are generally stronger than those who haven’t. They have higher self-esteem and are able to say no when they need to. Teaching your daughter how to be financially independent allows her to have more freedom and the self-esteem that she needs in order to keep from being taken advantage of by others in life.
Allows her the freedom to be herself at all times- Girls who learn financial independence have more freedom to feel as though she can be herself. Once she understands how important it is to be financially independent, she won’t be as anxious to please other people. She will be more likely to be herself at all times because she knows she can take care of herself as opposed to girls who don’t learn how to be financially independent.
Helps her make stable decisions- When parents teach girls to be financially independent, they also teach them how to make good financial decisions throughout her life. She is less likely to make disastrous financial mistakes. One financial misstep can lead to years of problems with credit on anyone’s part. Teaching your daughter how to be financially independent leads her to making better financial decisions in her life.
Bad relationship possibility lessened- Girls who aren’t financially independent often find themselves in bad relationships because they settle for someone who can help them financially. That isn’t always the case, but the possibility that a financially sound girl will stay within an abusive relationship is less likely than one who has not learned financial independence. Teaching your daughter about financial independence could save her from bad relationship choices.
Girls need to learn about how to be financially independent and responsible in order to live a completely full life. Far too many girls grow up thinking that their lives are supposed to be a fairytale where she gets married and lives happily ever after. That isn’t the case though. Some girls end up in that happily ever after scenario but over half of the marriages in the United States end in divorce. That is a staggering number. Girls should learn that it is alright to find a life for themselves before they get married. This will give them a well rounded life. That is why it is important for parents to teach their daughter’s about financial independence.
