So, after you extended an invitation to host overnight guests; they accepted and now you’re in a tizzy. In addition to the obvious, clean sheets and towels, here are time-tested tips for guest room preparation that will ensure you are ready for overnight company.
Tip for Guest Room Preparation – #1 Dress the bed
Sleeping in comfort will keep your overnight company refreshed and relaxed. Begin by dressing the bed with the finest linens you can afford. Keep in mind that a thread count of 250 or higher feels better to tired bodies. (Always purchase 100% cotton for even more comfort.)
To fluff the pillows and make them smell fresh, put them outside in the sunshine for a couple of hours. The sun also kills germs. Then plump the pillows and dress them in their fine linen slips.
Tip for Guest Room Preparation – #2 Freshen the Room
Open windows and closets for a couple of hours to let any stale air out, especially if the room is not used on a regular basis.
Empty the closet or make space for your company’s clothing. Add clothes hangers – don’t forget the kind with clips for skirts or pants.
If you have an extra ironing board and small steam iron, store it in the guest closet for their use. (After your guests leave, remember to empty any water from the iron.)
Tip for Guest Room Preparation – #3 Stock the Bathroom
Personal touches, especially in the bathroom, will make your guests smile if they have forgotten necessaries. Arrange an assortment of new toiletries – shampoo, sunscreen, toothpaste and new toothbrush, disposable razors and shaving cream, over-the-counter pain relievers, etc. – in a pretty basket.
In my estimation, those tiny finger-tip towels are useless for hand drying. Hang a couple of decent sized hand towels on the rack.
Reverse your position and think of times you were the guest. What bathroom needs did you experience that were not provided?
How about this: there’s nothing more embarrassing than having to request toilet tissue from your hostess. Always use white tissue, the colored tissue is not friendly to women, as it may cause an infection.
Tip for Guest Room Preparation #4 Final Touches
In the event your visitors decide to gad about and sightsee on their own, pack a tote bag with necessaries, such as a local map, healthy snacks, a disposable camera and bottled water.
Survey the guest bedroom and ensure the lamp on the bedside table is working. Plug in a night-light in case your guests get the “munchies” during the night.
Put a good pen, writing paper and a few magazines or a book of short stories in the drawer and place an alarm clock/radio on top of the bedside table.
Do you have photos of you and your overnight company? If so, display a couple of the best snapshots in a frame; if not, consider adding an arrangement of fresh flowers to symbolize “welcome to my home”.
They Drive, They Arrive – Are you Ready for Overnight Company?
When your guests arrive, except for a big smile and hugs all around, you are now well prepared to enjoy your overnight company.
Remember to old axiom – KISS – Keep it simple sweetie!
Prepare simple meals. Plan quiet time to rest between activities; watch movies or chat about old times.
You are a savvy hostess! Your overnight guests will leave with pleasant memories.
