Edinburgh, Scotland

You might not think that the capital city of Scotland would make a list of ‘cheapest vacation destinations in Europe’. However, there are many initiatives that make Edinburgh more affordable for travelers. For instance, the One Ticket program lets you get unlimited travel on buses and trains for an area surrounding Scotland. It is great value for money, particularly if you plant to visit some of Edinburgh’s fringe areas.

Hostels throughout Edinburgh provide affordable accommodation. You can find lists and rates on line or in a Edinburgh traveler’s guidebook.

For affordable eating, choose a hostel or hotel which provides a hearty breakfast as part of your rate. This will let you save money by eating a lighter lunch.

Newcastle, England

In the north of England is Newcastle. It is a city which is well-loved for its cosmopolitan atmosphere combined with affordable ‘northern’ prices. Check out the restaurants and cafes surrounding Newcastle university and University of Northumbria – they cater to students’ tight budgets.

Manchester, England
