Mel Gibson’s baby mama Oksana Grigorieva is being investigated for attempted extortion by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, USA Today and other news outlets reported today. A Sheriff’s Department spokesman announced the probe but refused to provide further details.
The Moscow-born musician is the mother of Gibson’s 10-month-old daughter Lucia. In or around February 2010, she secretly recorded the now-infamous “Gibson rant tapes” in which the Oscar-winner threatens her life, calls her filthy names, and uses racial epithets.
The Hollywood Reporter quoted a source who revealed that there exists text messages from Oksana that back up Mel’s extortion charge. Aside from money, her motivation seems to have been to force a reconciliation with Gibson as well as revenge for being dumped by her boyrfriend. According to the source, Oksana told Mel that the reason she made the secret recordings of his rants was because “you broke your agreement with me.”
The Gibson rant tapes have been a media sensation since first being posted on the National Enquirer-affiliated Web Site Radaronline. They essentially have destroyed the former mega-star’s reputation and movie career, as Grigorieva must have known they would. Sources in the Gibson camp have stated that he believes Grigorieva has been the source of the leaked rant tapes and of a picture of her broken teeth taken by her dentist that have been featured on the Radaronline site.
Grigorieva claims that Gibson hit her twice in the head during an altercation on January 6, 2010. Her dentist now apparently is claiming that the full-face photo of her featuring her broken teeth that is posted on the Radaronline Web site — she actually lost two veneers or “caps” from a blow to the side of the head that forced her to bite down hard on her teeth — has been altered.
Baby Mama Lied
In related developments, it is now obvious that Oksana Grigorieva lied to the press when she claimed that Mel Gibson left her and her child penniless after their breakup. Court papers obtained by The Hollywood Reporter reveal that the couple signed a $15 million custody agreement AFTER the alleged assault. The settlement was reached BEFORE she told London’s Daily Mail that Gibson was a “cruel father” who had left her and the child without a penny, forcing her to live off of her credit cards.
The Hollywood Reporter also reveals that Oksana’s attorney was admonished by the Family Court judge overseeing the case for failing to inform him about the settlement agreement when he applied for a restraining order against Mel Gibson in June. The judge said he might not have issued the restraining order or have issued it with different conditions had he known of the existence of the agreement.
The restraining order was soon modified in Gibson’s favor, and Mel retained his visitation rights after a subsequent court appearance, which indicates that the judge did not believe Grigorieva’s charge that he was a threat to their baby.
According to sealed transcripts obtained by the Hollywood Reporter, Judge Scott Gordon was “disturbed” by the behavior of Oksana Grigorieva’s attorney, Manley Freid. The judge issued the restraining order as he believed Grigorieva was justifiably frightened and feared for her life due to events in February (likely the time of the taping of the threatening Gibson rants).
That there had been an agreement reached by the couple in the interim indicated that Grigorieva didn’t feel as threatened as she and her lawyer maintained.
In his defense, Freid argued that he did not mention the agreement as it was irrelevant because Grigorieva lacked an attorney specializing in family law when she reached the settlement and had been the victim of false representations made by Gibson.
Freid’s arguments were characterized as “disingenuous at best” and “very disturbing” by Judge Gordon.
