There are many activities a family can do together. They can go on picnics, talk walks on the beach, plan a family vacation, visit museums. But plan a budget? Yes, plan a budget! Read on for some new ideas for fun activities for the whole family.
Plan Your Budget
Sitting at the dining room table with your family and planning a budget is a great activity. And believe it or not, it can be fun. Get the kids involved by having them pick out a toy they want to buy then help them make a plan as to how they can earn enough money to buy it. Show them how they can save money on electricity or phone charges then give them a cut of any savings that show up on the next bill. Teach them how to read the bills and how to balance a check book. Show them how to clip coupons and take them grocery shopping. It’s great education for your kids and they will have had fun in the process.
Volunteer to Help
Ask around to find out if anyone in your neighbor can use your help. Offer to paint someone’s garage or clean their home. Wash windows for an elderly couple. Build a dog house for a neighborhood dog. Just use your family’s talents and help someone. Teaching your kids that helping is a fun activity will encourage them to continue to help others when they grow up.
Take a Day Trip
Pack up the car and go off for the day. The special thing about this road trip is you don’t need to know where you are going. Just grab a map and drive! Stop to eat when the gang is hungry. Stop to stretch your legs whenever the mood strikes. Play travel games, sing songs or just talk. Take pictures of scenery along your route. Have the kids write about their adventure in a journal. Leave all the cell phones home, except one cell phone for emergency use. Want to take a very different day trip? Spend the entire day riding up and down the streets in your town! The kids will get a kick out of this grand adventure that lasts forever yet never crosses the town line.
Have a Yard Sale
A yard sale is fun and productive. The entire family can get involved with cleaning the house and garage. Let the kids set up their own displays of things they are selling. Make an entire weekend out of it. Get the entire neighborhood involved for even more fun. Then use the money you earn to buy something the entire family can enjoy. Or donate some of the money to a local charity or pet shelter.
Relax for a Day
Everyone is busy these days, even kids. With all the work and sports and cooking and cleaning there is not much time to relax. During the summer, try to have one day a week or one day a month when everyone just hangs out together and relaxes. Start by getting up late and eating breakfast in your jammies. Tell stories. Look at old photo albums. Lay on the ground and stare at the clouds. Order food so no one has to cook or clean. Rent movies. Soak your feet. Get in your jammies early and curl up on the couch. Enjoy each others company and take it easy!
