The Birthers who contest Barack Obama’s citizenship apparently have a new axe to grind, this time suggesting that the president’s Social Security number may be fraudulent.
The Parcbench blog notes that Obama’s Social Security number appears to have been issued out of Connecticut and was issued 2 years subsequent to the president’s first recorded employment.
Obama’s Social Security Card Issued 1890?
But Parcbench discredits itself when it goes on to say that the Social Security number used by Barack Obama appears to have been recycled. Before Barack Obama obtained his Social Security number whose use was first recorded in Chicago in 1986, according to this report, it belonged to someone else. The problem with this claim is that it’s ludicrous on its face. Parcbench says Obama’s Social Security number was originally issued in 1890. The Social Security program did not exist in 1890. The number 1890 is a birthdate, not an issuance date, and it appears that Parcbench did not understand the records it cited to support its contention that the president was using a recycled security card.
Did Obama Obtain Multiple Social Security Cards?
Pamibe is another site questioning the legitimacy of Barack Obama’s Social Security number, but Pamibe tells the story quite differently. According to Pamibe, the Social Security number now belonging to the president was first issued between 1977 and 1979. Pamibe’s sources say the president first went to work for Baskin Robbins in Oahu, Hawaii in 1975 and therefore must have had a prior Social Security number.
Neither site discusses the obvious fact that if Obama obtained his first job in Hawaii in 1975, he would have been but 13 or 14 years old. The president was born in August 1961 and graduated from high school in 1979. Perhaps he worked “under the table” as an underage teen in 1975? If so, he would not have been the first youth eager to get his first job and to engage in work while underage. This seems a far more likely- and less nefarious- explanation than social security fraud. At 13 (Obama’s age at the beginning of summer of 1975), Obama could not have obtained working papers to go to work in a non-family-owned commercial establishment.
Operating on the premise that a teenage Obama might have worked without a Social Security number if indeed he went to work at age 13 or 14, the underpinnings of the assumption that Obama claimed multiple Social Security numbers falls away.
Obama Social Security Number From Non-Residence State: Fraud or Not?
But an investigator cited by Pamibe insists that Obama’s Social Security number is fraudulent on another basis. Private investigator Susan Daniels reportedly said that she has never seen a the SSA mistakenly issue a Connecticut Social Security number to a Hawaiian. Perhaps, but it should be noted that Daniels has been employed as a private investigator in Ohio for the past decade. How many times has she had occasion to question whether SSA issued a Connecticut Social Security number to a Hawaiian? More than this one occasion?
The SSA assigns Social Security numbers based on mailing addresses used on the application form, not residence address. The investigators quoted by Pamibe cite the absence of a public record that Barack Obama visited Connecticut during high school as evidence of the Social Security number being fraudulent. This evidence is tenuous, as not every visit the president ever made in his youth is necessarily part of any public record. Moreover, Obama’s presence in Connecticut was not essential to his having obtained a Social Security card with a Connecticut prefix. He might have used an address belonging to a friend or relative for convenience if he expected to be away from home, for example.
It is legal to apply for a Social Security card at any social security office. It is not illegal to maintain a mailing address different from a residence address.
Is it peculiar that the president’s Social Security number was issued with a Connecticut prefix? Yes. But peculiar is a far cry from fraud.
What is missing from the Birther fraud analysis is a motive for any wrongdoing they allege was engaged in by President Obama.
What would Obama have gained by having a Social Security card with a Connecticut prefix? Nothing.
Has Obama ever claimed benefits belonging to someone else using this Social Security number? There’s no evidence of that.
If Obama had engaged in any wrongdoing using this Social Security number, the records would have led straight back to him since he consistently used this Social Security number, thus undermining its usefulness as a tool for engaging in fraud. If Obama was engaged in fraud and didn’t care that it could be tied back to him, why would he have bothered with a fake Social Security number?
When people commit fraud, there’s usually a reason for their choice of implements whether it be a fake Social Security card or any other documentation, and reason is glaringly absent from this latest Birther attack on the president.
