An apartment on the market near Columbia University is getting a lot of press today because Barack Obama once lived there during his student years. The two-bedroom former Obama apartment 3E at 42 West 109th rents for $1900. That’s with rent stabilization and without a famous person lived here surcharge.
Think Obama’s karma might rub off on the next tenant of apartment 3E so he too might become move up from 42 West 109th to 1600 Pennsylvania?
There does sometimes seem to be eerie correspondence of circumstance between sequential tenants of certain properties.
From Obama Apartment to Murder House
If prospective residents of the Obama apartment doubt whether living in the president’s one-time residence could bring them the same success as Obama, perhaps they haven’t heard of the Silver Spring murder house.
In Silver Spring, Maryland, D.C. school principal Brian Betts was founded murdered in his Columbia Boulevard home April 15, 2010. The murder of the popular principal was traumatic enough news before his colleagues realized exactly where Betts lived.
The house where Betts lived in a safe middle class neighborhood on Columbia Boulevard was previously the scene of a notorious double murder. In 2002, an intruder killed 9 year old Erika Smith and her father Greg Russell in what later became the Betts house.
Many people would be uncomfortable moving into a house knowing a murder was committed there, but two separate and unrelated murder incidents resulting in three deaths in the span of 8 years? Chilling.
Marriage House or Obama Apartment?
Obama was young and single when he lived in apartment 3E At 42 West 209th Street in New York City. While many young people would jump at the chance to waft in the successful vibes of an apartment Obama once lived in, success isn’t the only attribute sought after by young singles.
Marriage is on the mind of many a young single person. When I buying my first home, I nearly laughed out loud when I saw where the realtor had driven me. It was the home of a man I’d previously dated. He had bought the home new 5 years earlier, and now he was selling it as he was getting married.
It was weird enough buying a house from my former boyfriend (and yes, I was slightly jealous that he was getting married and I wasn’t even dating anyone), but imagine my surprise when I found myself putting that home on the market 5 years later due to my own marriage.
If your goal is to become a future president, snagging that Obama apartment might not be such a bad idea.
