Astonishingly, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was telling the truth when she informed the people of Ecuador that the Obama administration would sue the state of Arizona over that state’s anti-illegal immigration law.
CBS News confirms that a law suit is in the works, with the Justice Department currently building a case.
The dimensions of Obama administration incompetence are breath-taking.
First is the idea that Hillary Clinton announced the plan to sue Arizona to a foreign country’s media even before the American people were informed. The breakdown in the messaging operation for this administration is just profound.
Second, while it might be considered a good exercise to determine if the Arizona anti-illegal immigration law is constitutional, a law suit against a law supported by the vast majority of the American people would seem to constitute political suicide on the part of the Obama administration. This is especially true, considering that a large amount of Arizona border territory has been de facto ceded to Mexican drug smugglers and human traffickers.
The administration’s political strategy is rather transparent. It hopes, with a high-profile law suit, to rouse the passions of American Hispanics, and to impart the message that efforts to close the United States’ borders to illegal immigration are motivated by racism. This might have a little bit of that effect, but it will be at the risk of angering the vast majority of the American people who believe that the United States government should secure the borders, regardless of how they feel about Hispanics, illegal aliens, or “jobs Americans refuse to do.”
A trial, if and when it actually occurs, is likely to become a circus, with protesters on both sides of the illegal immigration issue drawn to it like flies to honey. This result will be entertaining for cable news, grist for the mill for radio talk shows and Internet pundits, but will not likely redound to the benefit of the administration.
In effect, the Obama administration will have placed itself in the position of approving of lawlessness in the guise of defending civil rights. In an era of economic turmoil and growing anxiety over the current administration’s ability to govern, this is not a position that any White House should care to be in.
The political winner will, no doubt, be Arizona Governor Jan Brewer, who will be seen as standing up to the White House and for the rule of law. That is a good position to be in.
