The Northwest Piedmont Service Corp serves youth in Forsyth County to help them improve their lives through education, developing job skills, learning self discipline, and instilling a sense of pride. The group celebrates its twentieth anniversary this year, and has helped hundreds of young adults in the northwest piedmont area of North Carolina. On May 14, 2010, the sixth annual Service Corps golf tournament was held at Winston Lake Golf Course. Over 90 golfers participated in the event which was a record breaking year.
Service corps members and volunteers organized and lead the events. Sponsors provided food, prizes and tournament shirts. Promptly at 10:00 am golfers were lined up in a sea of green and beige carts for the shotgun start. Local officials were present for remarks and to cheer the teams on. The day long event ended with team awards, raffle items, door prizes, and good food.
Corp members worked diligently behind the scenes to ensure the success of the event. Several members also helped to make up one of the teams. The motto of the Northwest Piedmont Service Corps is Ready, Willing, Able, as was obvious in their endeavors at the tournament.
The Northwest Piedmont Service Corp hopes to provide several key opportunities to corp members, including a comprehensive paid work experience, skill development and an overall awareness of strong work ethics. They contract with local residents and agencies for landscaping, light construction, and handy man type jobs. Corps members are also given a chance to pursue training that is a suitable match for their interests and abilities.
Young adults who have been in trouble or who may be considered to be ‘at risk’ make up a percentage of corp members. No one is turned away who is committed to learning and working. Corp members do have to complete an application and intake process to determine suitability for the program. Once in the program, they may be exposed to a variety of tasks; all of which are designed to motivate and build self esteem. The Corp takes a holistic approach with members, by developing physical fitness, involving in community events, and assessing each member individually.
The Northwest Piedmont Service Corp is involved in many local community events. They help set up Job Fairs, work closely with the City of Winston-Salem, and organized a recent local day of service where they along with recruited volunteers were involved in a community improvement project. Corp members restored the Odd Fellows Cemetery which had been neglected and was obscured with shrubbery, weeds, and debris. The Service Corp is also available for hire or to make contributions by contacting Reginald McCaskill at 336-761-2033. Support your local youth and mark your calendars for next year’s seventh annual golf tournament on May 13, 2011.
