I remember when I was growing up. Playtime in the backyard was amazing. We were always active and always doing something with our neighborhood friends. They called our backyard the playground because we had a set of swings. Everyday we would get out there, swing, play hide and go seek and a whole lot of other games. I guess that was one of the reasons why my mom used to always say that we grew in the summer time because we were the most active then; outside and having fun. There was never a day that went by that I was bored. There was always fun to be had outside.
When Nintendo came out, it was the one thing that kept me from running around and playing outside. My interest shifted from the active outdoors to sitting inside, staring at the television screen and using my controller to move my avatar. The games were fun but eliminated the active exercise I had been getting.
I remember the Nintendo games came in cartridges. My favorite game was Mario Brothers III. I would work really hard to get up to world eight and then all of a sudden, the game would malfunction. I would have to remove the cartridge, blow inside of it and restart all over again the game from the beginning.
Today, Nintendo has upgraded tremendously. I never thought I’d purchase a video platform to help me to reach my fitness goals but it’s true. I’ve heard and seen for myself how great both Nintendo Wii and Nintendo Wii Fit are and I decided to get both for myself.
The Wii alone is an interactive game. There is no sitting, staring at the screen and using the controller to move your avatar. Instead, now you actively become a part of the game and instead of moving the on screen avatar with the controller, you move the avatar known as Mii with your entire body. You become an active part of whatever game it is that you are playing.
The controller now is like a remote. Of course it has buttons on it like the A, B, 1, 2 and + or – controls, but it is more used to track your body movements as you play each and every one of the games you play. The games are no longer cartridges but DVDs. Also included as a second controller is what they call a numchuck which is used in games that include two hands. This controller could be used for boxing games, fighting games, juggling and more.
The first thing you do when you start the Nintendo Wii is create your avatar or your Mii. In the Mii station, you can choose everything from facial structure, eyebrows, eyes and lashes, hair style and color, nose, skin color, size, height and more. Each player creates a Mii which actively keeps progress of what you do and how much you’ve done.
With just the Nintendo Wii, there are a number of games that actually come with the system that you can use that can really help with fitness such as tennis, boxing, baseball and bowling. But the Nintendo Wii Fit is an added platform that is used primarily for fitness. It is almost like a stepper you would use to do step aerobics with. It takes four batteries and is to pressed on with your toe. Then you stand on the Wii fit platform and do all your exercises on it. With the Nintendo Wii Fit, you can do anything from yoga, strength training, aerobics or balance games. Progress is kept with body tests that weighs you and gives you your BMI each time you decide to do a body test.
I got the Wii and the Wii fit to help me with my fitness goals. When I first started playing it and took the body test, I set my goal to lose five pounds every two weeks. After just a week of usage, I lost three pounds. After two weeks, I lost ten pounds. Interesting to me how at once Nintendo used to be this sit down game that could actually make youth gain weight from not being active and now Nintendo is an interactive game that is helping me lose weight. Nintendo Wii & Nintendo Wii Fit have suddenly changed my life and I am more than happy. I plan to use it as often as possible.
