NFL Draft Round 2 2010 Now Centers on Clausen, McCoy

by itchyfish

The NFL draft round 2 2010 has a brand new context this year. In the past, the NFL draft round 2 would come immediately after round 1, but in 2010, it comes one day later. This is the true test of the new draft format, as teams have more time to choose their next picks. Will they make better post-first round choices than they would have if they didn’t have an extra day? Of course, that will be impossible to answer until their rookies get on the field. However, the NFL draft round 2 2010 doesn’t have the kind of big names left that many expected.

The common wisdom was that Tim Tebow would be the biggest name left after the first round, and that tonight’s round 2 and 3 would be focused on where he would go. However, the Broncos made that mute when they picked Tebow at No. 25, leaving ESPN and the NFL without Tebow to hype tonight. But the pick was so surprising, they are bound to talk more about him tonight anyway.

But the NFL draft round 2 2010 now has two big quarterbacks left, instead of just one. Jimmy Clausen and Colt McCoy were all over the place in mock drafts, though most expected one or both of them to get picked last night. Instead, they are both still out there, so they will be at the center tonight in place of Tebow.

Since Clausen and McCoy have fallen to the second day, so have expectations for their future. Teams that passed on them last night will have another chance in the NFL draft round 2 2010. Since they filled more gaping holes and priorities in round 1, perhaps they now have room to improve their quarterback depth.

With their slide out of the first day, and with Tebow going before them , Clausen and McCoy have their extra motivation to prove everyone wrong. Of course, it now may be a more uphill battle and wait to get on the field, depending on who gets them.

Obviously, the NFL draft day 2 for 2010 will mainly center on Clausen and McCoy. But there are other players who are looking to go up, and avoid waiting for day 3. College stars like Golden Tate, Toby Gerhart, Dexter McCluster and Terrance Cody are also still available. Meanwhile, the Eagles No. 37 pick will be scrutinized, since they got it in the Donovan McNabb trade.

In most drafts, players that get taken after the first round can make a bigger difference. So although the NFL draft day 2 2010 won’t have the glitz of last night – especially since it’s on a different night now – it could be one that determines a future Super Bowl winner or contender.

Clausen, McCoy and the other remaining prospects find out their fate at 6 p.m. est tonight on ESPN.
