The NFL Drafts 11th through 20th Draft picks were more like a hot potato as teams kept tossing them around as some NFL teams moved up while others fell back. The 49ers were the first to move up to the 11th spot trading with Denver and then Miami traded out. Some of the moves had more to do with financial considerations. A player taken in the top 15 in the NFL Draft is awarded a slotted salary.
#11 NFL Draft pick San Francisco 49ers-Anthony Davis offensive tackle Rutgers.
San Francisco must have been worried about losing a chance at Anthony Davis so they made the move to trade up with the Denver Broncos. Denver, expected to pick Dez Bryant can pick him up in San Francisco’s spot and save some money. Anthony Davis has a few discipline issues but with Mike Singletary on his case, Davis won’t want to be slacking off any time soon.
#12 NFL Draft pick San Diego Chargers-Ryan Mathews running back Fresno State.
Another huge surprise was San Diego trading up in the NFL Draft. San Diego was expected to draft a running back in the first round but they were expected to grab Jahvid Best or an outside chance at Toby Gerhart. Ryan Mathews may be the best running back in the NFL Draft. Mathews should have less wear and tear on him and is a player that loves the ball. He loves to make contact but he played in the WAC which is not as rough as other conferences. Mathews did miss games with injuries but nothing major. Mathews will play special teams and spot start in the back field for San Diego.
#13 NFL Draft pick Philadelphia Eagles-Brandon Graham defensive end Michigan.
Another defensive end going early in the NFL draft and starting a second string of defensive ends to be picked, Brandon Graham was one of the best players on a bad Michigan team. Brandon Graham has a solid technique from the outside and will be a solid back up in Philadelphia. Don’t be surprised if Graham is starting in the NFL in 2010.
#14 NFL Draft pick Seattle Seahawks-Earl Thomas safety Texas.
Earl Thomas is another solid safety out of the Big 12. Thomas is the definition of a ball hawk. Some players just know where the quarterback is going before the quarterback knows and Thomas is that player. Thomas may not start for Seattle but he will play almost immediately for Pet Carroll.
#15 NFL Draft pick New York Giants-Jason Pierre Paul defensive end South Florida.
Jason Pierre-Paul is an athlete, just look at his you tube video doing back flips across the field at the NFL Combine, here. Jason Pierre-Paul only has one season at the highest level in NCAA College football and he will be a project. Jason Pierre-Paul is for depth and he may play a little in the 2010 NFL season for the New York Giants.
#16 NFL Draft pick Tennessee Titans-Derrick Morgan defensive end Georgia Tech.
Tennessee may have been doing back flips when they watched Derrick Morgan fall all the way down to their 16th draft position. Derrick Morgan can be an instant starter in the NFL and there is an 80% chance Morgan will be in the starting line up for Tennessee in the opening game of the 2010 NFL season.
#17 NFL Draft Pick San Francisco 49ers-Mike Iupati-offensive tackle Idaho.
Mike Iupati was a top 10 NFL Draft prospect until the Senior Bowl. Playing against stronger talent Iupati had six holding penalties and was labeled a grabber. Still with Iupati’s size, speed and long arm reach, he will be molded into a great offensive lineman. He won’t start but he will play in the NFL 2010.
#18 NFL Draft pick Pittsburgh Steelers-Maurkice Pouncey center Florida.
Not a sexy pick but Maurkice Pouncey can start on opening day for Pittsburgh with Byron Leftwich hands under him. Pouncey is a solid center used to having to think fast working with Tim Tebow. A solid pick by Florida.
#19 NFL Draft pick Atlanta Falcons-Sean Weatherspoon linebacker Missouri.
Atlanta may have a dressed a need but there were better players available in this spot. What about Kyle Wilson? Sean Weatherspoon is a solid pick but interesting.
#20 NFL Draft pick Houston Texans-Kareem Jackson cornerback Alabama.
Another team that let Kyle Wilson drop is Houston.Kareem Jackson of Alabama is a great corner with tremendous speed and he will fit in well with Houston.
