I wish these so-called experts would stop trying to pick who the Patriots are going to draft every single year. While some other teams may be predictable, the Patriots are not. I have been a life time fan, and have been very impressed with the way Robert Kraft operates his team. Bill Belichick knows what he’s doing when it comes to picking and signing players, yet fans and analysts alike continue to try and dictate what is best for the team. Yes, I am a fan and a true believer in Bill Belichick and the Patriot way. However, I don’t pretend in any way to think I know what is best for the team or criticize the decisions the team makes when it comes to personnel.
Everyone’s all over the Patriots for not making any significant off season moves to keep up with the Jets and Dolphins. Analysts and fans are already predicting a Super Bowl run for the Jets because of the players they have signed. Personally, I think they will be a bust because they’re just scooping up a bunch of egos that couldn’t find a home anywhere else. LaDainian Tomlinson peaked in 2006 and has declined every year since then, and Santonio Holmes is an ego with baggage. Even Rex Ryan is full of his own ego. Mark Sanchez is totally average as a quarterback and hasn’t yet earned the praise he receives.
Do the Dolphins even have a quarterback for Brandon Marshall? Then there’s the Bills. The lowly Bills. I don’t think anything more needs to be said about them.
My point is, the Patriots are smart. They have been since Belichick arrived. There’s no need to worry. They know things that they don’t let the rest of the world in on and why should they? Why should they let their opponents know what moves they are making? I wouldn’t either. It’s strategy that usually works out, except we did miss Richard Seymour last year on defense. Or did we?I was a long time Adam Vinatieri fan long before his infamous kick in the snow against the Raiders. I was with him since his rookie year. Was I aggravated when they didn’t resign him during his final free agency? Yes, but what do I know what’s really going on. You don’t let one of the best kickers in the league just walk away for no reason. As it turns out, Vinatieri has battled numerous injuries since he signed with the Colts. Richard Seymour was another favorite of mine, but he was injury plagued the last few seasons. Trust me. They know what they are doing at Patriot Place in Foxboro.
The Patriots are stacked with picks in the second round, and will gather a few more during the first round of the draft because there are some areas that need to be addressed. They will address those needs in the draft by drafting smart, effective players and not the flashy money players.
Two predictions that I will make:
The Patriots will trade away their first round pick for another 2nd and 3rd selection. They will also draft Toby Gerhart, the running back out of Stanford. I see him as a Craig James type runner, and a definite need on the team. Despite what everyone keeps saying, the Patriots will not draft Tim Tebow. They have no need for him as a quarterback or as a science experiment. Belichick doesn’t run that stupid Wildcat formation, and Tebow is sloppy with his delivery. Maybe he was a success at the college level, but that doesn’t always translate to the NFL level. I would love to see Myron Rolle on the team.
I also think we will see Ben Roethlisberger in a silver and black uniform before the end of the day.
