An unlikely candidate for a scandal, Mark Hurd, CEO of Hewlett-Packard since 2005 announced his resignation on Friday. He resigned as the result of an investigation of a sexual harassment claim filed against him by a former contractor to HP and upon recommendation from the board at HP. The probe found that there was no violation of HP’s sexual harassment policy, but did find violations of HP’s Standards of Business Conduct. Who was the contractor who filed the claim against HP CEO Mark Hurd? That was not known until today.
Today, Aug. 8th it has been disclosed that the contractor (marketing assistant) who brought down the biggest CEO in the computer industry is Jodie Fisher. Who is Jodie Fisher and why did she file this sexual harassment claim against Mr. Hurd?
Jodie Fisher’s background includes former HP marketing dept. contractor from 2007 to 2009, salesperson in a Fortune 500 company, actress in some (not so successful) R-rated movies, and star in the short-lived NBC reality TV show “Age of Love.” She is also a 50 year old single mom.
During her stint at Hewlett Packard, Fisher’s responsibilities included helping organize events and then to greet and make introductions among executives attending the meetings. Her fee was up to $5,000 per event.
Both Fisher and Hurd have stated that they did not have sex and was not in a sexual relationship, so what was all the fuss about? Apparently Fisher caused Hurd to pad expense reports by $14,000 because of his infatuation with Ms. Fisher, which backs the HP findings of violations of the company’s Standard of Business conduct. His conduct was also known by his staff, and even though Hurd was a billionaire and could have repaid the money back, he lost his credibility with Hewlett Packard. It is a shame that someone in Mr. Hurd’s powerful position of responsibility could be so naïve and put himself in such a predicament as this.
Jodie Fisher’s attorney Gloria Allred issued a statement today on Fisher’s behalf that read “I was surprised and saddened that Mark Hurd lost his position over this. That was never my intention.” Fisher has settled with her claim with (the married) Mr. Hurd privately, without litigation for an undisclosed amount. Corruption and stupidity are alive and well in the Silicon Valley.
