The Keuka Lake Wine Trail, located in Steuben and Yates Counties in New York State’s Finger Lakes region, has a long-standing place in wine history in New York. In 1860, the first bonded winery was established here, and the first Vinifera vines were planted here as well.
Keuka Lake is the most unusually-shaped in the series of lakes, taking the shape of a “Y.” The picturesque region hosts a number of bed and breakfasts, inns, and local restaurants for the many travelers who venture to the area’s wine trails, which includes Seneca Lake and Cayuga Lake as well. Keuka Lake Wine Trail features eight member wineries, many of which are family owned and operated.
Located at 243 State Route 54 (East Lake Rd.) in Penn Yan, Keuka Spring Vineyards was the recipient of the Governor’s Cup for outstanding wine in 1998 (Cabernet Franc). Founded by the Wiltberger family in the early 1980s, Keuka Spring Vineyards features a tasting room, opened in 2004, which overlooks the lake. Founded in 1962, Dr. Konstantin Frank’s Vinifera Wine Cellars is one of New York State’s most awarded wineries. Located at 9749 Middle Rd. in Hammersport, Dr. Frank’s features an international wine-making crew with winemakers from California, Australia, France, and Germany. Hunt Country Vineyards is in its sixth generation of family ownership. Located at 4021 Italy Hill Rd. in Branchport, the winery has earned a reputation for its Vidal Blanc Ice Wine, which has been ordered by the White House and served at the United Nations. Hunt Country Vineyards produces and sells two dozen wines from 100-percent New York State grapes, and also features Italy Hill Produce (grown on-site) and Hunt Country Wine Shop for your purchasing pleasure. Heron Hill Winery was founded in the early 1970s and has the distinction of having “one of the World’s Most Spectacular Tasting Rooms” – the Tasting Hall – as rated by Travel & Leisure Magazine. The winery, located at 9301 County Road 76 in Hammondsport, features live music, the Blue Heron Café, wedding facilities, and a gift shop on its grounds.
