The New York Giants and Eli Manning took a step back in 2009 and they will need to tie up some loose ends to make a difference in the 2010 NFL season. Tom Coughlin has emphasized in early OTA’s, the team lost their edge as a physical team and this played a role in their downfall.
The Giants broke out of the gate fast, winning their first five games in the 2009 NFL season and then the wheels fell off. The New York Giants stumbled to the finish line with a dismal 8-8 record, managing only three wins in their last eleven games. New York’s season turned on a dime as they dropped four games in a row, playing New Orleans and Arizona back to back, then facing division rival Philadelphia and a hot San Diego team.
Eli Manning Still Gets Knocked For Leadership in the New York Giant Press
The New York press never goes easy on their stars in losing situations and possibly the toughest place to quarterback in the NFL is New York. Eli Manning has heard from day one that he has lacked the leadership skills to win consistently. Even though Manning has a Super Bowl victory under his belt, Manning still hears the comments as the New York Giants prepare for a comeback in their 2010 NFL season.
Manning will be tested by some tough defensive teams early in the season. The New York Giants face the Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans in their first three games and all three teams should be improved on defense over 2009.
Wide Receiver is Position That Could Use Some Help for New York Giants
The New York Giants practiced in their new stadium for the first time and in their first practice New York lost their number three wide receiver and kick return artist, Domenik Hixon for the entire 2010 NFL season with a torn ACL. Mario Manningham is the number two wide receiver on the team and he told ESPN’s Dana Jacobson, “The field is definitely slippery.”
It will be interesting to see how long it will take Terrell Owens and his agent to contact the New York Giants and Tom Coughlin. Owens has been ignored by NFL owners so far in the free agency period but is expected to receive a call when a key receiver goes down.
The Running Game Needs to Buy Eli Manning Time In New York Giant Backfield
The New York Giant running game still features Brandon Jacobs as a critical component but can he stay healthy. Many Eli Manning supporters directly blame Brandon Jacobs sub par year on the New York Giants demise. Jacobs never rushed for more than 100 yards in the 2009 NFL season.
Ahmad Bradshaw is going to have to be major factor in the 2010 NFL season if Jacobs does not improve during the season. Bradshaw never got going as the number two back and Bradshaw later had stress fractures in both feet and subsequently had surgery to remove bone spurs. The New York Giants may regret passing on a running back in the 2010 NFL Draft.
New York Giants Defense Will be Another Key to Big Start
The New York Giants have always been known as a defensive team. Head coach Tom Coughlin is a hard nosed coach that believes defense wins Super Bowls and this season he will think no differently. Coughlin’s statement that his team needs to be more physical in the 2010 NFL season, is a direct assault on his defense. Calling the New York Giants defense out before training camp, shows Coughlin is wasting no time with the head games in 2010.
Osi Umenyiora and Justin Tuck will receive much needed help on the defensive line, with the arrival of the freakish Jason Pierre-Paul. The South Florida defensive end lacks the sharpness of many defensive ends coming into the league but his sheer athleticism will help to free up Tuck and Umenyiora. He will have to work his way into the lineup but if he can see 50% playing time in the 2010 NFL season, Pierre Paul could be a huge addition.
New York Giants Over/Under Win Total in Las Vegas is 8.5 Wins
The New York Giants are not expected to improve much if we are to believe the Las Vegas Hilton Superbook. They posted the New York Giants Over/Under Win Total at 8.5 wins. This may be accurate at the moment but if the New York Giants defensive line improves and Brandon Jacobs can stay healthy, New York can surprise the better teams in the NFL.
