Norwegian Cruise Line or NCL Epic was christened by country western singer Reba McEntire, a frequent guest on NCL, on July 4th 2010 in New York harbor. NCL is known for having “firsts” in the cruise industry. For example, it initiated the private islands, freestyle cruising and now an extraordinary ship, Norwegian Epic, after four years of construction and development. Norwegian Epic has already begun its Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries from Miami continuing until April 30, 2011. Included are 10 things being talked about the Norwegian Epic.
Norwegian Epic Staterooms
Norwegian Epic stateroom walls are curved or wavy, instead of linear. The beds are round and the couch is contour fitting the wave of the wall. Beds are short and passengers over 5’11” will find their feet sticking off the end of the bed. All outside staterooms include a balcony.
Norwegian Epic Baths
The shower, with a clear view door, is on one of the stateroom and the toilet is on the other side with the sink in the middle of the room. As you can imagine, the water tends to go in different directions in the stateroom. NCL is working on this situation.
Norwegian Epic Dining
No shortage of dining restaurants on Norwegian Epic. There are 17 total from steakhouse Cagney’s, O’Sheehan’s Bar & Grill with its pub favorites of fish and chips, and Moderno Churrascaria for its skewers of barbecued meats.
Norwegian Epic Entertainment
Norwegian Epic has impressive top entertainment. Try Cirque Dreams’ two-hour dinner show with “opulent eccentricity a la entertainment extravaganza presented with an array of world-class talent, Broadway acrobatics, a touch of whimsy, and tasteful participation.” Other sample acts are a comedy show featuring sketch comedy and improvisation by Chicago’s Second City and the Blue Man Group like a show you would see in New York’s East Village.
Kids Programs on Norwegian Epic
Norwegian Epic is kid friendly with two bowling alleys. Three multi-story water slides; one is a tube slide with a 200-foot drop. It is the only one of its kind at sea according to NCL. The Aqua Park has a kid’s pool and a wading pool. There is Nickelodeon at Sea programs and family entertainment, Dora the Explorer and Sponge Bob Square Pants milling around. Norwegian Epic‘s Sports Complex includes a basketball court and a large climbing wall, 33-feet high and 64-feet wide. In addition, Norwegian Epic sports a Spider Web, an enclosed 24-foot tall climbing cage.
Public Areas on Norwegian Epic
Usually cruise ships go from the 12th to the 14th deck, skipping the 13th. Not so with Norwegian Epic, it has a 13th deck. A 40,000-pieces crystal glass chandelier graces the atrium. Invaluable art, such as Picassos and Chagalls, line the walls of Le Bistro French restaurant.
Norwegian Epic Solo Studios
Norwegian Epic has 128 solo studios with a Studios Lounge. Solo travelers no longer have to pay double for a cabin. The Studios Lounge has a meeting area with TVs, a private bar for cocktails and a private concierge for booking shore excursions. Travelers have to be 21 to book a solo studio.
Norwegian Epic Suite Complex
Norwegian Epic has a 60-suite complex surrounded by a courtyard with a private gym and dining room. This kind of configuration is not represented on other luxury cruise lines.
Ice Bar on Norwegian Epic
Norwegian Epic ‘s frozen Svedka Ice Bar features Inniskillin ice wine and Svedka vodka drinks. It is the cruise industry’s first ice bar designed after ice bars in Scandinavia. The LED lighting of purple, green and blue hues gives the effect of experiencing the Northern Lights. Everything is made of ice, tables, stools, walls and the bar. Room temperature is 17 degrees Fahrenheit. Guests have to wear gloves and hooded fur-lined coats. The bar can be reserved from 5:30 pm to 10:30 pm for 25 guests. It costs $20 for each person and includes two cocktails.
Police Station on Norwegian Epic
Norwegian Epic has a holding cell since the ship holds 7,000 people. It is like a small city.
