NBA free agency 2010 has been targeted by the Knicks for two years. The NBA free agency 2010 gold rush had to work for the Knicks, since NBA free agency was the last hope to save them. Most believe they did worse than usual during the last two years on purpose, since they were too busy clearing cap space to get more wins. New Yorkers hoped the strategy would pay off to bring LeBron James around, so that the King could restore Knicks basketball. However, the NBA free agency 2010 race has the Knicks as long shots for LeBron – so they are settling for Amare Stoudemire instead.
For all of the expectations around this free agent class, no one has actually changed teams yet. Technically, they can’t until July 8, but there has been no concrete evidence that the big names will leave their teams yet. Therefore, Amare Stoudemire represents the first big name on the NBA free agency 2010 list to change addresses.
Stoudemire will get a five-year, nearly $100 million contract from the Knicks, once he can actually sign it on Thursday. The deal still leaves enough room for the Knicks to make one more big deal, although hopes that James will make that deal are limited.
After two years of Knicks fans begging James to come to New York, NBA free agency 2010 has the Knicks as afterthoughts. The Nets made more of a push for James than the Knicks did, after all the hype and anticipation. Although the Knicks aren’t officially out of the running, they are long shots behind the Cavaliers, Bulls and Heat.
If the Knicks can’t get James, the NBA free agency 2010 period will be regarded as a bust for New York. However, this makes their move for Stoudemire all the more important, since they need to save face with at least one big pickup.
If they can’t attract James, they hope to get Dwyane Wade or Chris Bosh instead. Stoudemire himself bragged that he talked to Carmelo Anthony and Tony Parker about joining him, according to the Wall Street Journal. However, the NBA free agency 2010 race is still stalled until James makes his choice.
Since that won’t come for several more days, even the Knicks couldn’t wait any longer before making another move. But, if Stoudemire is all they get after all this, it will merely be the latest embarrassment for the once-proud franchise.
Aside from Stoudemire, most of the NBA free agency 2010 news has been about players staying with their teams. If James and Wade do the same, this whole period will officially be nothing special after all.
