Naturopathy is an alternative type of medicine that allows the body to heal and maintain itself based on the healing power of nature. In other words, it is the belief that the body will be healthy if it is in a healthy environment with clean air, fresh water, and plenty of sunlight. It originated in Europe and was later introduced in the United States in 1902 by Benedict Lust who is known as “The father of U.S. naturopathy”. Lust created the first naturopathy school called the American School of Naturopathy. This school taught students how to let their bodies naturally cure and it also was one of the first schools that taught the idea of having a healthy diet with more fiber and less saturated fat. Many naturopathic doctors use other alternative medicines in their practice such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, and homeopathy. When treating patients, naturopathic doctors attempt to determine a persons state of mind, body, and spirit.
Today, naturopathy is gaining popularity in the United States and Canada. Herbal medicine and acupuncture have become two of the most common treatments performed by naturopathic doctors. Naturopathic doctors believe that things such as diet, history, lifestyle, environment, spirit, body, and mind all have an impact on a person’s health and many of their beliefs are similar to regular family doctors. They also believe that things such as sunlight, air, and water can effect a person’s state of health and this is what sets them apart from family doctors. Although regular family doctors do believe that fresh air and clean water are essential items to have in order to live, they do not put as much emphasis on those ideas as much as a naturopathic doctor does. Hypnosis has also become common for naturopathy doctors and counseling is used in certain cases. Detoxification is one of the most popular techniques used by naturopathic doctors. Detoxification is a therapy that removes all of the toxins from a persons body by drinking lots of water and using enemas.
Naturopathic doctors can treat symptoms such as arthritis, HIV, infections, congestive heart failure, hepatitis, and many other diseases or illnesses. The ability to treat chronic diseases is naturopathic medicine’s greatest success. A naturopathic doctor will be more concerned with treating the entire lifestyle of a person than just treating an individual disease or illness a person might have. They talk with the patient about how to live in the right environments and how to eat healthier which will alter a person’s overall health in a positive way.
