The average person starts showing signs of aging in their early twenties. Laugh lines are typically the first to appear, followed by the beginnings of those impending crinkles around the eyes. While some people take their wrinkles with pride, many dread getting older and will go to any means (and expense) to try to retain their youthful radiance as long as they possibly can.
To maintain youthful skin, one must understand what encourages aging the most and take preventative measures. Smoking, dehydration, rapid weight loss/gain, poor diet, and sun exposure are nasty culprits that speed up the aging process. Of course, genetics also play a part (take a look at your parents and it will give you a good idea of what you may be having to look forward to) but there are many environmental factors that each individual faces that they can avoid to prevent premature aging and/or reverse preexisting aging.
The first preventative measure is staying hydrated. Skin gets loose and baggy when it cannot retain moisture to replenish its cells and replace old cells that have sloughed off. Drinking water regularly helps the whole body stay young and the skin supple and able to care for itself by filling the skin cells and plumping the skin. (think of a sponge- when filled with water it is full and hefty, when dried it is wrinkled and shriveled. This is your skin cells when you don’t keep them hydrated.)
Sunscreen is an absolute must, even in winter. Sun exposure causes the skin cells to break down, and can lead to that leathery look most people want to avoid. Simply wearing sunscreen every single day can help protect the whole body from sun damage that wrinkles and damages skin. Imagine your skin cooking like bacon. With sunscreen you can block the harmful rays that cook your skin.
There are natural remedies for skin to put much needed nutrients into the skin so it can regenerate new cells for a radiant, healthy appearance. What the skin craves is vitamins and Omega-3s to create new skin cells to replace the old, damaged ones. Pure Castor Oil, which has odor-free versions, Coconut oil, and Vitamin E oil (broken from the gel capsule) are rich in nutrients that when rubbed on the skin at night help treat and prevent wrinkles and fine lines. The skin (and whole body) regenerates the most during rest, so getting a great night’s sleep with these oils aiding the skin in rejuvenation will allow your skin to work in reproducing collagen, which is what creates skin elasticity and fullness, and allows the skin to produce super healthy skin cells to replace the old, damaged cells for supple skin when you wake up. Applying these oils (odor-free Castor oil and Coconut oil especially are rich in Omega-3s and Vitamin E, skin’s favorite nutrients) every night will help your skin look its best.
To help tighten sagging skin, especially puffy skin around the eyes, egg whites are an excellent solution. The nutrients in the egg whites help to tighten the skin and provide a plumping boost, due to them being full of protein and healthy fats that your skin craves. Take 2 egg whites in a bowl and apply liberally to your face, especially wrinkled areas, such as forehead, around and under eyes, and around the mouth. Let tighten and leave on for 10 minutes. Rinse with warm water and pat the skin dry. Applying this remedy once or twice a week helps the skin stay tight and plump.
Rubbing Castor oil along the neck and jawline helps to ease the appearance of the saggy neck wrinkles. It can also be rubbed on the chest for smoother, healthier looking skin.
Another great concoction for wrinkle treatment and prevention is a mixture of lemon juice, honey, plain yogurt, and Vitamin E. Combine 3 Vitamin E capsules (broken and the liquids poured out), 1/2 teaspoon of honey (the thick, non-runny pure honey is best but even regular store-bought honey will do) 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice, and 2 tablespoons of plain yogurt together in a bowl. Apply the mixture to the face and allow to set for 10 minutes, then rinse with warm water and pat the skin dry. The acids in the lemon juice work as an exfoliant for the skin, and the combo of honey, yogurt, and Vitamin E provides the proteins and vitamins and healthy nutrients the skin needs to healthy rejuvenation. This mixture can be made in batches and stored in the fridge for application a few times a week. For best results, apply to the face, neck, and chest to allow skin rejuvenation in all exposed areas that experience aging.
The great thing about skin is it can reverse the effects of damage and aging significantly, so even if you already have ample sagging and wrinkling and dryness, you can treat the damage with noticeable results. While protecting your skin with a healthy diet (yo-yo weight loss and gain causes your skin to sag because it is constantly being stretched and loosened- think of a balloon you blow up and then release the air; what’s left is a wrinkly, stretched out mess) hydration with water (avoid sugary drinks, which rob your body and skin from utilizing the water amounts you are consuming because sugar is dehydrating) and wearing sunscreen everyday is the best way to prevent skin aging, you CAN treat preexisting skin damage and reverse signs of aging for radiant, youthful, happy skin.
