Ninjutsu Zenkai Chacrash is a recently new title from the Naruto Shippuden series that came out for the Nintendo DS. It follows the recent developments of the manga series and anime. Does this game have all the things that make a game great as well as being true to the manga and anime?
Naruto games, on the Nintendo DS, most of the time stay pretty on track of how much story content they put into the game. They put just enough so we can’t complain that they’re going on another direction. This game, on the other hand, stays completely true to the order of the story pitting characters in all the key battles and dialogues from the manga as well as keeping a fun and Naruto comedic feel to it. The story starts at the point where Sasuke begins to recruit new members to help him along his journey and goes all the way to him defeating Itachi, his brother. There are also scenes where Naruto is training as well as having new characters such as Pain. In between each battle there are dialogues and animations to watch. It’s very entertaining and I found myself actually reading it all instead of skipping it. They did a very good job here keeping the interest of the story alive!
Game Play 4/5
I love what they did to the game play in this game. What you will be spending most of your time doing is fighting other characters. It might seem like a boring thing, to fight other ninjas over and over again. That is not true at all! Let me explain how battles work. In the story mode battles, there are many stages where you take control of a main character and fight 1 or more ninjas in a set arena. Arenas can be forest with trees to jump on all the way to mountains with ledges to navigate. There are many stage hazards that intend to hinder players as well as aid them. For instance, there are kunai strapped with explosives that come out of no where every once in awhile and there are smoke bombs that, if caught in the blast, would confuse the player making it hard to navigate your character. It’s 2d and the characters look great. You are able to double jump, execute combos and of course, activate powerful jutsu moves. To add to the gameplay, you are also able to activate jutsus at will without spending chakra, keep in mind that the only downside is that the move is weaker. You are able to have up to four ninjas on the screen at once. Having these ninjas add a huge depth in game play. Sometimes you will have a partner to work with and sometimes you will have to fight against 3 others! Overall, I’d say the game play is smooth and It’s a great portable fighter. One of the best Naruto games there.
Since this game is based off the anime, you’d expect the characters and environments to look like the anime. Of course! A huge step in how the other games where presented, the world of Naruto in this title all look very detailed and alive. Compared to the previous titles, the characters are much larger and that means we are finally able to see more motion with the characters as well as facial expressions. The arenas are colorful and explosions never looked as good. The big improvement on the graphics are the ninja specials. Each character can have up to three specials that they can unleash in battle. After making sure you have enough chakra to unleash it you tap on the DS touch screen and watch as your character mangles the others up! Graphics in the specials vary, there are lighting blades, giant toads, fire balls, and much more. There are no problems in glitches or anything like that. The presentation of the game is solid!
The music is the generic sounds you’d hear in any Naruto game. It makes you feel as though you are in a ninja village yourself. It has a Japan culture feel to it. The sound effects are all there. Explosions and punches galore! The thing that really stood out to me in this game was the character voices. I wasn’t really expecting too much here but I was wrong. The ninjas in the game all have their own set of lines to say and it’s great hearing the how clear it sounds. As soon as battles start we are treated to a little opening where the ninjas animate and say a line. The most satisfying thing in this game is when you pull of a special that is sure to hit and you here your ninja shout out, “RASENGAN!!!” It feels awesome!!
I was surprised to found out how much content was packed into this game. Let me just list all the things there are to do here. There is the story mode that consist of much dialogue and tons of battles that will keep you busy for awhile. There is a free mode where you can set up any battle you want, being able to pit any ninjas in teams and making your own rules. There is an arcade mode where you choose your difficulty and character and progress through ten stages fighting a new character at the end. There is a handful of characters to unlock that fit in with the story of the manga at the time. Some characters you can unlock are Jiraiya and Pain. One of the fun things for me is the addition of the mission mode. Here, you choose your ninja and set out to complete random missions that vary on difficulty depending on what grade mission it is. For example, some missions pit you against clones of yourself and other restrict you from using specials to fight. After passing missions you get rewards like new specials for your characters. There are so much stuff to unlock. !
Naruto Shippuden: Ninjutsu Zenkai Chacrash is the best Naruto game on the Nintendo DS. It has so much content and gives Naruto fans what they want.. Hardcore action and in depth game play following the story. The game play is so smooth and responds really well. Fans of the series will cherish this game until the next great installment. If you are worried about the translation problems, there no need to worry. You can play this game entirely without the need of any knowledge of the Japanese language. The game is easy to learn without reading and I was able to beat the story as well as unlock many characters. If you’re wondering if there is wi-fi then yes. There is an option to connect to the internet to battle others online as well wireless to play with other around you. This game is awesome and I recommend you get this right now!!!!
