The Jersey Shore has just rapped up its second season with all the same gang from season one. This reality TV series came out of nowhere and became a big ratings show for MTV. Jersey Shore is full of drinking, swearing, “hooking up”, and “fist pumping”, which has garnished the stars with a bad reputation. Now people from the State of New Jersey have something to say about this.
Snookie, Jwoww, The Situation, and friends, are a group of twenty something young adults who became overnight celebrities for basically demonstrating bad behaviors. People tuned in weekly to see what this group of hard drinking roommates would do next. They never failed to outdo themselves with bar fights, promiscuous sex, and overindulging in alcohol. There was even an arrest.
MTV has portrayed the Jersey Shore stars as the typical New Jersey young adult on summer vacation. This is not what the residents of New Jersey have in mind for a portrayal of their young citizens. In a recent story on CBS News, Long Branch, N.J. resident John O’Keefe voiced his opinion about the shows that stereotype the people of NJ. Snookie from Jersey Shore seems to epitomize the young woman from New Jersey and this is just not so. “Snookie is not what the average young woman from New Jersey is like at all.”
Jersey Shore depicts the young adults as a bunch of hard drinking misfits, with minimal vocabulary, that are more interested in hair products than their future. It makes for great entertainment, but that is all there is to it. In fact, most of the cast is from New York and surrounding states.
The residents of New Jersey will most likely not have to worry about the way the Jersey Shore cast tarnish their reputation much longer. It won’t be long before this big haired crew is just a memory, and not a very good one at that.
Even though Jersey Shore broke out and ran away with the ratings, there is just so much people are going to want to watch over and over again. It was entertaining to watch these young adults make fools of themselves on the show and even on the many talk shows they have appeared on, but how long can this last?
It is my prediction that the first few segments of Jersey Shore Season 2 will gather ratings, but then it will slowly fade away. The cast of Jersey Shore has given us such an array of bad behavior, that there is not much left for them to do for that “shock value” we have come to expect.
The cast has done it all and it will become boring very quickly. MTV had a good idea, but they went wrong by keeping the same cast. If they had put a new group of people together for the second season of Jersey Shore, they might have been able to keep their viewers, but Snookie and the gang’s antics are growing old. New Jersey will get rid of this group fairly soon, people are just going to get tired of seeing Snookie falling over again and again.
