Irish Grandmother who spun over orginal stories to make them her own.
My Grandmother is the best grandmother in the whole world according to the eyes of an eight year old. Grandpa agrees that she is a mighty fine women in touch with telling “THE WHOPPER” that is how he puts it. At my tender age, I never knew what he meant about “The Whopper.” I am much older now and realize that my grandmother bless her heart, told the childhood stories to make them fit the era in which we lived. Grandmother had several whoppers to tell but the one I believe was one of my favorites and I still tell it in Grandmothers special way. See if you can tell which childhood story, I am retelling. Perhaps you would like to do the same for your children making the story fit your child’s way of life.
Once upon a time, a cute little blonde girl had lots of curls and baby blue eyes. This little girl named Brenda well loved by everyone with her kind gentle ways. Everyday about noon her nanny took her to the play park to have lunch and play on the park equipment. The nanny of course would be able to talk to her friends socializing with other nannies at that time. The park surrounded by a forest of beautiful trees, which Brenda cautioned knew not to follow any paths that might lead her in to the forest. The forest was enchanted with magic and strange things could happen to a small child like her. Brenda usually always listened to her nanny and she was afraid of the strange forest. Sometimes she dreams the trees followed her home and that scared her even more.
Today was a beautiful sunshiny day and Brenda looked forward playing in the play park with all her friends. The nanny was anxious to get there as well to find out more about the Thompson new butler. She liked him and thought him handsome wanted to know if he was married etc. The nanny for the Thompson household was scheduled to be there with little Jacob. She arrived a bit early and set up the picnic lunch for herself and Brenda and they began to eat when Maggie arrived with Jacob. The two nannies began chatting instantly and when the children declared they were ready to go play both nannies simply waved them on without any instructions. Brenda was playing on the monkey bars when a beautiful butterfly flits her way right close to her little blue eyes. She jumped off the monkey bars and began chase. Jacob who saw this began to run with Brenda as they both gave chase down the path that led straight into the enchanted forest. Before the children realized it, both were in the middle of the enchanted forest and lost. Brenda began to cry but Jacob comforted her and told her that he was sure the nannies would be by soon and find them. Jacob concluded we would all have a big laugh about this and go straight home.
The children had rested and realized it soon would grow dark decided to walk a little farther and see if they could find shelter for the night just in case. Soon they came upon a cute little cottage all covered with ivy and morning glory flowers. They saw that the back door was open so they decided to enter. First, they entered into the kitchen and on the table set bowls of macaroni and cheese. Both children were exceedingly hungry so they ate the macaroni and cheese all up until every bowl was empty. Suddenly, they heard voices in the living room so they wonder into the doorway and saw that it was merely the TV. Dora the Explorer was on and both liked that show so they decided to go in and watch for a while. They did not want to mess up the two big chairs so they both decided they could set in the smaller rocking chair. Soon the chair went splat and broke into tiny pieces. The children looked around and found a bedroom that had a small set of twin beds since it was late and they were both tired they decided to go to bed and sleep until the morning. Jacob had figured after a good nights rest they could figure out what they should do and he was so tired his sleepy little eyes closed fast a sleep as so did Brenda.
Moments later four Gnomes entered the cottage with a bucket of fresh honey and a bucket of blackberries. Mamma gnome declared this would make a fine addition to our dinner. I will make us all some blackberry cobblers. They entered in the back door setting their buckets on the kitchen counter when the two little gnomes spotted the table and cried out all at once, our macaroni and cheese is all gone. Mamma and papa checked and sure enough not a bite left for any of them. Papa told everyone to stay behind him that someone had surely entered their home for ill purposes. When they advanced into the living room the little gnome children began to cry that their rocking chair made for two was broken into pieces. This greatly worried both mamma and papa for they feared the worst. They all tip toed into the bedroom where they spied both human children sound a sleep in the beds. Mamma gnome declared why they are only small children no need to fear. At that, both Brenda and Jacobs’s eyes opened wide scarring them half to death when they saw the gnomes.
Both children jumped out of bed and ran for the door as quick as a flash. The gnome’s children called out for them to wait and come back. The human children both kept right on running down the pathway until they got to the park clearing and both jumped out of the forest right into their nannies arms. The nannies being frightened because of their disappearance hugged the children and made them promise never to enter the woods again. The children being so frightened made the promise readily. Brenda’s nanny headed towards home with Brenda on her shoulder holding on tight and Jacob did the same. The children ask their nannies what would be for super and both nannies replied macaroni and cheese! This was a perfect end to a beautiful day! There were no bears, no portage, and a modern TV with a modern show, which made the story seem almost real.
