There are a lot of perks of being a major league baseball player. Being a baseball player means a lot of money, a lot of fame and it also means that your family members could be drafted by Major League teams even if they don’t deserve it. In the 2010 MLB Draft family members of former and current players and coaches were constantly going off the board.
2010 MLB Draftee: Cameron Bedrosian
Father: Steve Bedrosian
Cameron Bedrosian was drafted in the first round by the Los Angeles Angels. Bedrosian is the son of Phillies reliever Steve Bedrosian. For a period of time Bedrosian was the Phillies closer and led the league in saves in 1987.
2010 MLB Draftee: Delino Deshields Jr.
Father – Delino Deshields
Delino Deshields Jr. is following in his father’s footsteps as a second baseman. Junior was drafted in the first round by Houston. Senior played 13 seasons in the Majors and is probably most remembered for hisyears in Montreal and Los Angeles.
2010 MLB Draftee: Kellen Sweeney
Brother – Ryan Sweeney
Second round pick Kellen Sweeney is the younger brother of Oakland A’s Ryan Sweeney. The older Sweeney is currently having his best season with a .314 batting average and on pace to top his career high in runs and RBI.
2010 MLB Draftee: Cory Vaughn
Father – Greg Vaughn
Poor Greg Vaughn went unnoticed in 1998. Vaughn hit 50 home runs but didn’t lead the league and only finished fourth in the MVP voting thanks to the McGwire/Sosa home run race. Hopefully Greg Vaughn’s son, Cory Vaughn, will have better luck getting noticed.
2010 MLB Draftee: Patrick Leyland
Father – Jim Leyland
In the 8th round the Detroit Tigers drafted the son of their own manager. Jim Leyland has been a good manager over the years with the Pirates, Marlins and Tigers and soon his son Patrick could be in the league as well.
2010 MLB Draftee: Brett Bochey
Father – Bruce Bochy
The Tigers weren’t the only team to draft their manager’s son. In the 20th round the Giants decided to draft the son of their manager, Bruce Bochy.
2010 MLB Draftee: Ozney Guillen
Father – Ozzie Guillen
The Chicago White Sox also drafted Ozzie Guillen’s son Ozney Guillen but the older Guillen was upset that his son was not drafted higher.
2010 MLB Draftee: Dillon Moyer
Father – Jamie Moyer
If Dillon Moyer has a career as long as his dad’s then we could be hearing the Moyer name for another fifty years or so.
2010 MLB Draftee: Mark Tracy
Father – Jim Tracy
The Colorado Rockies also drafted the son of their coach. I haven’t seen this much coach’s son favoritism since I played in little league.
2010 MLB Draftee: Benito Santiago Jr.
Father: Benito Santiago
Benito Santiago was a great defensive catcher but his son will be playing first base in the Cubs organization.
2010 MLB Draftee: Devon Ethier
Brother: Andre Ethier
Andre Ethier is quietly one of the best players in the National League so his team, the Los Angeles Dodgers, drafted his younger brother Devon. If Devon is even close to as good as Andre then the Dodgers will be pretty happy.
2010 MLB Draftee: Beau Brett
Uncle – George Brett
George Brett doesn’t have a son that was drafted this season so we’ll have to settle for a nephew instead. I’m sure Uncle George taught Beau plenty of tricks and not all of them legal.
2010 MLB Draftee: Bo McClendon
Father – Lloyd McClendon
Now the Detroit Tigers are drafting the sons of their assistant coaches. Does Rafael Belliard have a son playing baseball too?
2010 MLB Draftee: J. J. Franco
Father – John Franco
John Franco is the New York Mets all-time leader in pitching appearances by a long, long distance. Perhaps his son, J. J., will also have a long career.
2010 MLB Draftee: Ben Verlander
Brother – Justin Verlander
Detroit is drafting family members again. This time the Tigers took on the younger brother of their ace Justin Verlander.
