Minocqua is a town in Oneida County located in Northern Wisconsin. Many of the residents that live here are seasonal due to the town being located right on Lake Minocqua. Tourism plays a substantial role in the economy of the town.
Each season is vital to Minocqua. Winter draws snowmobile enthusiasts from all over, Fall is huge for hunting season, and spring and summer for water activities, hiking and any other outdoor activity. All of these activities will work up an appetite for those that participate in them, so you also need a good place to go to eat in Minocqua. The Thirsty Whale is definitely that place.
The Thirsty Whale has been serving and entertaining the city of Minocqua since 1950. They continue to get people of all ages coming back for more. The building is over 100 years old, so it is a piece of history in the city. It has been used as a boathouse, boat repair shop, and then a bar and restaurant, just different names throughout the years.
The Thirsty Whale is located at 428 Park Street right on Lake Minocqua. So as you eat you can enjoy the view of boats, water skiers and all other water activities that are happening on the lake. And if you are on the boat or Jet Ski and you are hungry, you can pull right up and park it at the loading docks as you grab a bite to eat.
For seating you can either sit inside the covered deck, or if it is nice out you can sit outside right on the deck and enjoy the weather and view. It is great sitting out here as you watch and listen to the boats going past and the fresh wind blowing through your hair.
For appetizers you have the option of ordering items like coconut shrimp, bacon wrapped scallops, loaded nachos, artichoke and crab dip, bruschetta, cocktail shrimp, or good old Wisconsin’s favorite cheese curds.
To hit the spot for lunch, the Thirsty Whale offers choices like bleu cheese and bacon burgers, smokehouse burgers, or just a plain old burger or cheeseburger that are all flame broiled and very tasty. They also have a Cajun chicken sandwich, BLT, Grilled Cheese, steak sandwich, beef and cheddar sandwich, and a few other options.
For soups they always offer homemade chicken noodle soup or wild rice clam chowder. If you are looking for something lighter like a salad, the menu offers chicken, shrimp or Ahi Tuna Salads, or a black and bleu Cobb salad topped with tenderloin tips.
Dinners offer a great variety of pastas such as chicken tettrazini, blackened Mahi-Mahi, and jerk chicken sauté. You can also order items like Ahi Tuna, Key West grouper, Canadian walleye, and deep fried shrimp. There is so much that the menu offers, it will be hard for you to choose what to order.
If you go on a Wednesday night, you will get to enjoy the music of Tuck Pence. If you have not heard Tuck Pence play before you are in for a treat. Tuck is a one man band that plays a variety of music with his guitar. He is excellent and plays all over the state of Wisconsin.
Overall the Thirsty Whale is a great spot just to take a time out from your activities and have a cold beer and a great meal to help energize you back up! You will not be disappointed in the size portion of the meal, the taster or the price. They all met my expectations and then some. I will definitely be going back to the Thirsty Whale the next time I am in Minocqua. So I highly recommend when you are in the area of Minocqua to check out this local and tourist favorite hot spot!
