While I am all for tooting your own horn, individual pride, and being your own champion and whatnot, I am a little concerned about something my wife and I recently discovered from one of the “talent agencies” in Charleston South Carolina; Millie Lewis Models & Talent Agency. Millie Lewis Models & Talent Agency has been around Charleston since 1979 so obviously the agency must be filling some need within the community. However it was one thing in particular which caught my eye and makes me question the validity of this 30 year old talent agency at all.
About Millie Lewis Models & Talent Agency: From their own website, Millie Lewis Models & Talent Agency of Charleston “offers specialized training through (their) school, international recognition through (their) agency, professional full service salon and photo studio,” just to start. Millie Lewis Models & Talent Agency is and has been a member of the Better Business Bureau, Chamber of Commerce, and the American Modeling Association.
Millie Lewis Models & Talent Agency Accolades: Having been in existence for more than 30 years should make Millie Lewis a fairly recognizable name in the world of modeling and talent, right? Well, according to their website, Millie Lewis Models & Talent Agency was “selected as the outstanding member of the Millie Lewis Actors Models & Talent Competition (AMTC).” Wait, what? Millie Lewis received an award from…Millie Lewis? The only other accolade mentioned on the Millie Lewis Models & Talent Agency main page (remember this is the “about us” section of their own website) is the “Lifetime Achievement Award,” Millie Lewis Models & Talent Agency received “at AMTC 2003.”
What is AMTC: Naturally the next question I asked was, “did I read this right?” Was this Millie Lewis Models & Talent Agency really pimping themselves out as winners of their own award? So I did a bit of research and the AMTC (Actors, Models & Talent for Christ) is “an event hosted by Millie Lewis, the company.” Okay so maybe they’re different things; like AMTC & Millie Lewis are separate entities or something; right? Well, “…To separate Mille Lewis, the company, from Millie Lewis, the model, is almost impossible.”
Mille Lewis Only Won Once: Okay so then the next question one must have to ask themselves is “so Millie Lewis Models & Talent Agency only won one award in their 30 years in existence (the AMTC website also says that “The Millie Lewis Company was started in 1960,” by the way)?” The first logical question I would think to ask was who else did you give this self-intended award to every year Millie Lewis? Why didn’t you win this award more often in your 31 or 50 years of existence?
Millie Lewis R.I.P.: Millie Lewis the person is deceased. In 2001 apparently she died of Parkinson’s disease so that’s very sad. I would like to think that the living could remember her life well rather than as a mockery. I’d like to think that Millie Lewis the model and founder of the Millie Lewis agency would not handle her affairs in this way were she still here to tend to them. I’d also like to think that whoever is still alive and running the affairs for the Millie Lewis Models & Talent Agency would get themselves together, streamline your message, and clarify what you’re putting out into the world about Mille Lewis the person and about Millie Lewis Models & Talent Agency before you begin confusing freelance writers like me and the rest of the world of Charleston who could avail themselves of your services.
