Tonight on American Idol, Michael Lynche sang It Only Hurts When I’m Breathing by Shania Twain. Each of the six remaining contestants have been celebrating the song book of Shania Twain this week. Twain was back on Idol this week as mentor to the remaining six. I loved what Shania was able to do as a judge on the show. People, like Shania, that are inspired tend to inspire others. And that is exactly what was delivered tonight on Idol, except by Michael Lynche and Siobhan Magnus. Both were of their performances were bad, due to their voices just not being as good.
Michael Lynche remains in the top 6 on American Idol, and I have to admit I am rather surprised. I consider him to be the worst singer of the group. Consistently, the worst singer of the group.
Lynche’s song choice was too feminine for a big guy like Mike to sing, especially after he has chosen tender songs the past couple of weeks. It is okay for a big guy to sing such a song, just not time after time. It gets old. Though his voice is strong, I consider his voice mediocre. I compare him to the others in the competition and I am just surprised he is still on American Idol. I wonder if his personality is getting him through? Because he seems to have more personality than singing talent.
While he seemed to be feeling his performance, which is a good thing, and allows him to connect with his audience, the performance was just mediocre. He doesn’t seem to have a lot of range in his voice. He can carry a tune, but the only singing he does well is when he hits the highest part of his register. He had a couple of those moments tonight, but just not enough of them to compare to the other performers in the show.
I personally believe that Michael Lynche will be sent home on results night. And if he is safe then it has to be because he is so likable. It has to be. If he makes it through he certainly needs to get back to happy, feel-good, strong, powerful songs. Something that doesn’t make him seem like “he hurts when he is breathing”. Dude, I totally don’t want to see Mike hurt. But, if he sings one more sensitive song I might just change my mind. You get my point. I like strong looking people to be more strong than weak, it works better that way.
Michael Lynche is a father, his personality is bright, and he seems to have it all together. His voice is decent, and has potential. Although the judges saved him a few weeks ago, I see Lynche as Anoop Desai, but with a personality for television. I think if he really works on his voice range he would have a better chance of staying in the game.
Lynche is up against extremely talented singers like Aaron Kelly, Lee Dewyze, and Crystal Bowersox. Those three are who I see as the most talented, and who I hope to see in the top 3. Aaron Kelly’s voice has the most potential and he is amazing lyrically. Lee Dewyze is a musician who performs, connects, and entertains every single time. And then you have Crystal who can sing like Janis Joplin, play like Melissa Etheridge, and has an amazing ability to entertain. It’s a tough season for sure. And that is why I see Michael Lynche going home soon.
Siobhan Magnus is a wild card in the game. She is a pretty good singer, she is entertaining, and quirky. But she is starting to seem like a watered down version of Adam Lambert. It was cool for a while, then her screaming and weak voice got old. She has had her moments, and some really good ones. I like her better than Lynche, without a doubt. I think she is more talented as a singer than him as well. But, the thing I see as holding her back is that her voice is very soft. She is starting to show cracks in the her pitch, mid-way, before she hits the high notes, and before she screams. I like her performance because they are bold, but sometimes I just feel bad for her when her voice croaks, or when she is too close to the microphone and it makes that terrible noise. Which she does almost every single performance.
So, who is your favorite contestant this season, and did you vote? Did you vote for Lynche? Who are you hoping to see in the top 3? I am hoping that my predictions are right with the top 3 being Aaron Kelly, Lee Dewyze, and Crystal Bowersox. I think Michael Lynche will go home this week, or maybe Siobhan Magnus.
