Mermaid Halloween Costume Ideas for Women

by itchy fish

Making a mermaid costume requires a bit of skill and ingenuity. If you don’t have any sewing skills, your best bet is to buy your mermaid Halloween costume pieces or rummage for them in your closet. A bikini top would work very well with a mermaid costume. You can also transform a straight or tapered skirt into a mermaid skirt by hot gluing some sheer fabric to the end. For an easier mermaid costume, you can try making simple changes to a formal dress with a mermaid skirt.

If you can sew, get a mermaid costume pattern that contains adult sizes. You can change the mermaid Halloween costume to your preference by selecting fabrics of different colors and designs.

Mermaid Princess Halloween Costume for Women

To get started on the mermaid princess Halloween costume, get a blue or green satin tapered skirt and top. The skirt should end just below the knee. If it doesn’t, cut and hem it. Attach sheer fabric such as chiffon or tulle to the end of the skirt so that it sprays outward. Make a tiara from a tiara band, heavy gauge wire and faux pearl beads. Thread the pearl beads through the wire, then twist the wire about an inch down from the pearl. Wrap the wire around the tiara band and use wire cutters to cut off the excess wire. Use flat-nosed pliers to squeeze the wire where it meets the tiara band. Get a 12 inch silver plastic dowel and some metallic blue or green chenille stems to make a mermaid princess wand. Shape the chenille stems into the shape of a shell by looping them next to each other and overlapping them slightly. Attach them to the dowel with twine. Attach some blue or green ribbon to cover the spot where the stems are attached to the dowel. Attach some additional blue or green ribbons to stream down from the top of the dowel.

Glittery Mermaid Halloween Costume for Women

If you will be sewing your Halloween costume, you can purchase glitter fabric, which is available fabric stores. However, there are other ways to add glitter accents to an existing mermaid costume. One method is using glitter glue, which you can find in a wide range of colors in craft stores. You could also try attaching glittery decorations such as seashells and starfish to your mermaid costume using hot glue. If you can’t find glittery decorations, then coat them with sliver glitter glue and allow them to dry before attaching them. You can also add glitter to mermaid accessories such as a tiara, wand, jewelry and sandals.

Sequin Mermaid Halloween Costume for Women

The sequin mermaid Halloween costume is another one you can sew yourself. Sequined fabrics tend to be rather expensive. However, if you like you can add sequins to your mermaid Halloween costume by sewing on sequined trim or fringe. If you have the time and patience, you can also sew some sequins on your Halloween costume by hand. You’ll also need some small E beads to hold the sequins in place. Using sequins is a great way to transform a simple bikini or tank top into a glitzy mermaid costume piece. For example, you could use them to create a seashell design on your top. You can also use sequins to make an old or second-hand dress into a mermaid costume. If you’d like to add sequins to your mermaid costume accessories, hot glue them on.
