Mel Gibson’s rant against his baby mama Oksana Grigorieva has derailed his already lackluster movie career. The Web site Radar Online post an excerpt from one of the secret recordings that Grigorieva made of the faded star as he spewed forth his hatred of her. The audio on the Radar Online Web site features Gibson using the “N-word” to refer to African Americans, whom he characterizes as potential rapists.
Radar Online also has published transcriptions from other recordings revealing that Gibson’s racism, which already encompasses African American and Jews, extends to Hispanics. In one of the secret recordings, America’s most famous bigot since Archie Bunker called one of his staffers a “wetback,” a derogatory term for Mexican-Americans and Mexican immigrants.
Two hours after Radar Online posted the audio featuring Mel dropping the N-bomb, his talent agency, William Morris Endeavor, terminated its relationship with him.
Things just keep getting worse for Mel Gibson, now locked in the nastiest custody battle Hollywood has seen in generations. Though Oksana Grigorieva signed a confidentiality agreement with Gibson as part of a settlement (one that Gibson’s lawyer say she is determined to break), she has leaked these damaging tapes.
Ironically, when asked her comment about the latest revelations, Grigorieva said she had “no comment.” She earlier has said she had been silent about being physically assaulted back in January by Gibson in order to protect his reputation. After the leak of the secret recordings, Gibson has no reputation to protect.
In a transcription of one of the recordings printed on Radar Online, Gibson raved about a Hispanic staffer, “I will report her to the f—ing people that take f—ing money from the wetbacks.” He seemingly is threatening the woman’s life as he is stating his intention of turning her over to traffickers in human beings.
“Wetbacks” is a slur originally used to disparage Mexicans who swam across the Rio Grande to enter Texas illegally. It seems Mel was threatening to turn his staffer over to immigration authorities.
Other news reports elucidate Grigorieva’s claims that Gibson has threatened her life. Apparently, Mel has said he plans to burn down the Sherman Oaks house she and the baby live in and also has threatened to bury her in his rose garden.
“You Deserved It”
Even more explosive than the latest racist rant is Mel Gibson’s admission that he physically assaulted Oksana Grigorieva as she held their two-month-old daughter in her arms. Grigorieva is heard on the tape asking what kind of man could hit a woman when she was holding a baby. Her former lover, who has castigated her looks and accused her of getting a boob job before yelling at her that he didn’t love her anymore, is unsympathetic.
“You know what?” Mel tells Oksana. “You f—ing deserved it.”
In the excerpt of the recordings posted by Radar Online, Grigorieva remains remarkably composed, almost as if she is setting Gibson up. Gibson is extremely upset, going through an emotional meltdown.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has announced that it is opening a domestic abuse investigation into Grigorieva’s charges. The Moscow, Russia-born musician, previously involved with actor Timothy “James Bond” Dalton (by whom she has a teenage son), claims that Gibson punched her in the face twice in January, breaking her nose and knocking out some of her teeth. Gibson’s attorney has denied the charges.
Mel Gibson, who admitted to having struggled with alcoholism all his adult life after his infamous 2006 drunken driving arrest in Malibu, is clearly a man with anger management issues. At the time of his arrest, a Los Angeles County deputy sheriff who is Jewish reported that the movie star, after asking him if he was a Jew, went into an anti-Semitic tirade and threatened him with retaliation.
Later, while being booked at the local police station, the Oscar-winner reportedly greeted a female cop with the appellation “Sugar Tits.”
When asked about this incident in early 2010, when Gibson was making the press rounds to thump the tub for his new movie Edge of Darkness (his first starring role in seven years), he was quite boorish with journalists. When Chicago TV personality Dean Richards of WGN-TV asked him whether the public had overcome the 2006 anti-Semitic incident, Gibson became highly defensive. Downplaying the event, he rather insincerely said that he had issued all the necessary apologies for his behavior. Gibson then claimed he was past it and chided RIchards for dwelling on it. He then audibly called Richards an “a–hole” after the interview was concluded and good-byes had been said.
Gibson later claimed he had called his assistant an “a–hole,” saying the assistant was making faces at him, off-camera.
The sincerity of Gibson was put into doubt by a a similar incident, when a Los Angeles entertainment reporter asked him whether the anti-Semitic rant was one of the reasons he had been off the silver screen so long, Gibson retaliated by remarking obliquely that the reporter brought up the incident because he was Jewish.
At the beginning of his review of Edge of Darkness , Pultizer Prize-winning critic Roger Ebert asked two questions: “Can we think of Mel Gibson simply as an action hero? A star whose personal baggage doesn’t upstage his performances?”
Ebert — who is a gentile — said he could forget the stars reprehensible behavior, stating that , “[Gibson] remains a likable man with a natural screen presence.” He gave Edge of Darkness three stars out of four, but the movie was a flop at the box office.
In the late 1980s, throughout the ’90s and into the early 21st Century, Mel Gibson was a mega-star, one of the leading box office attractions, commanding $25 million up front and “points” (a share of the gross) per movie. He won an Oscar for directing Best Picture Academy Award-winnerBraveheart (1995), which was a big hit. With his reputation now in tatters and shunned by the Hollywood establishment, Gibson’s career is shaping up as one of the most spectacular flame-outs in Hollywood history.
