Last week, the NAACP came out accusing the Tea Party of being a ‘racist organization’. In response Mark Williams, right-wing talk show host and Tea Party Express vice-chairman, posted what he called a ‘satirical letter’ on his blog. A letter which showed once and for all how racist a person Mark Williams is and what a racist organization the Tea Party Express is. After a massive backlash online and on radio and TV, the National Tea Party Federation had no choice but to kick Mark Williams and the Tea Party Express out of the national organization. Particularly if they didn’t want to be called racist too.
Mark Williams offensive and racist letter started out this way:
“Dear Mr. Lincoln, (the letter was supposedly from ‘coloreds’ to Abraham Lincoln) “We Coloreds have taken a vote and decided that we don’t cotton to that whole emancipation thing. Freedom means having to work for real, think for ourselves, and take consequences along with the rewards. That is just far too much to ask of us Colored People and we demand that it stop!”
The letter then went on to say ‘coloreds’ didn’t ‘want to work’, were ‘striving for welfare’ and wanted to buy ‘flat screen TV’s with white people’s stolen money’. (And remember, this was written at a time when Mark Williams was telling anyone who would listen that he was “not racist”).
Mark Williams then proceeded to book himself on every American talk show he could to explain why he and the Tea Party Express weren’t ‘racist’. In response, any sane person can only ask “Huh?”
The National Tea Party Federation spent a couple of days not saying very much then, on Sunday, apparently asked the Tea Party Express to fire Mark Williams and to disassociate themselves from him. The Tea Party Express response was simply to demote Mark Williams from ‘vice chairman’ to ‘spokesperson’. Which leads me to ask, if the person who is your ‘spokesperson’ is being condemned all over Kingdom Come for being ‘racist’ and you’re supporting him, doesn’t that say your organization is probably racist too?
The National Tea Party Federation obviously thought the same as, on Sunday’s “Face the Nation” on CBS, Tea Party Federation spokesperson David Webb said “We have expelled Tea Party Express and Mark Williams from the National Tea Party Federation because of the letter that he wrote.” The Federation represents more than 1 million activists in more than 85 groups, many of whom, it seems wanted nothing to do with Mark Williams.
All of this isn’t surprising to anyone who’s heard Mark Williams speak. In the past he’s called President Obama “an Indonesian Muslim turned welfare thug” and refused to denounce the racist signs seen at Tea Party events, saying they were brought by Tea Party detractors (weirdly, they show up at every Tea Party event and nobody in the Tea Party tries to get it stopped).
Whether or not the National Tea Party Federation is racist who can say. But, kudos do have to be given to them for expelling Mark Williams and the Tea Party Express from under their umbrella organization. They’ve now categorized him and his organization as a “lunatic fringe group” and, from now on, anyone who joins the Tea Party Express as nothing more than racists.
