The biggest and best known lakes in Atlanta with boat ramps and marinas are Lake Lanier and Lake Allatoona. We will give you information about Atlanta’s most popular boating lakes first, and share some of Atlanta’s awesome hidden boating locations next. Family Fun and Boating at Lake Lanier
Lake Lanier is a popular Atlanta resort location for day trips. Overnight camping and lodging is also a favorite feature of Lake Lanier, which is not only a fabulous boating location, including a marina and numerous boat ramps, but also offers a world class water park for the kids.
Lake Lanier is a great family boating location, with 38,000 acres of water to enjoy. If you need equipment you can rent everything from a boat, to skis, to fishing equipment at Harbor Landing.
Lake Lanier Islands is less than an hour from the heart of downtown Atlanta and can be reached via I85 north to I985. Follow the signs to Lake Lanier.
You may also watch for signs indicating Lake Sydney Lanier, of which Lake Lanier Islands is a part. There are plenty of boat landings around the miles of shore associated with Lake Sydney Lanier.

Boat landings at Lake Allatoona
Lake Allatoona is a man-made lake, built and maintained by the Army Corps of Engineers, fed from the Etowah River. Lake Allatoona is another of Atlanta’s favorite family boating locations for fishing, skiing, tubing, and relaxation. Lake Allatoona offers 1,2010 acres of lake to explore, along with camp sites, a marina, parks, beaches, and miles of pristine hiking.
Take I75 northwest of Atlanta and follow the signs for boat ramps and input locations.

Carter’s Lake Boat Ramp, Marina, and Boating Information
A little further north of Lake Allatoona is a great little lake, Lake Carter, with camping, hiking, beaches, and boating. Boat ramps are easily accessed and a marina is available on-site at Lake Carter with slips that accommodate small boats to large houseboats.
Lake Carter is a pristine location apart from the crowds that frequent Lake Lanier and Lake Allatoona. There are 3200 acres for leisure boating, recreation, and deep water fishing. Personally, this is one of my favorite lakes near the metro-Atlanta area.

Boating at West Point Lake
Along the Georgia / Alabama line, southwest of metro Atlanta is beautiful West Point Lake, which follows the Chattahoochee river for 35 miles and has 525 miles of shoreline for your family to enjoy.
West Point Lake is an ideal location for boating and outdoor recreation. There are over 454 planned recreation areas in the area surrounding West Point Lake. This includes boat ramps, marinas, campgrounds, picnic areas, playgrounds, beaches, parks, and nature trails.
West Point Lake is a favorite among local boaters and fisherman, with 25,9000 acres of water there is not much you cannot do at West Point Lake. The lake is home to ass, brim, trout, and catfish, making it a perfect location for fishing. The lake is also ideal for personal watercraft, sailing, pontoon boats, fishing and recreational boating.

Little Tallapoosa Lake Boating and Recreation
It’s not uncommon for Atlanta boaters to cross the state line into Alabama to enjoy Lake Tallapoosa, but it is not necessary to leave Georgia to enjoy the recreational waters west of Atlanta. Give Little Tallapoosa Lake a try.
Little Tallapoosa Lake is a reservoir in Carrolton, Georgia that is another favorite among Atlanta fisherman. A little smaller than the other lakes mentioned, it is often quieter providing a relaxing boating and fishing location. There are a number of boat ramps, recreation, and picnic areas to enjoy. The family can also enjoy hiking and shore fishing when you decide its time to dock the boat.
