Global Crossing is an organization at the front line of global communication. This organization expands the global market, has excellent customer relationships, and effectively manages world wide. Global Crossing has a large team of leaders that have thorough background knowledge and experience that creates this companies presence as a global organization possible. Through efficient management and application of leadership, this organization capitalizes on globalization and encourages organizational culture.
A manager controls and monitors resources, employees, and work. Managers have complete and detailed knowledge of the organization and its functions. Managers utilize the four functions of management in order to accomplish the goals and visions of an organization (Bateman & Snell, 2009). Managers must provide stakeholders with value while keeping employees working and focused on the goal of the company. Managers must also maintain the budget and monitor daily activities of an organization. Not all managers are leaders, but excellent managers must possess leadership skills (Bateman & Snell, 2009). In the current business world managers do not only manage a company they also inspire innovation and encourage enthusiasm.
Leaders influences employees in the direction of goals, and have followers who believe in their plans and goals (Bateman & Snell, 2009). Leaders create enthusiasm and inspiration in employees of an organization. Leaders must effectively organize change and direct effort in the path of new opportunities. Leaders work toward long term goals and visions of a company, and they influence employees towards this end (Bateman & Snell, 2009). The most effective and beneficial managers are those who also possess leadership skills.
Management and leadership are different roles, but a manager can also be a leader. Global crossing is an organization that realizes the power of both leadership and management. This organization refers to management as the “leadership team;” this organization requires managers to also be leaders (Global Crossing, 2010, Para. 1). Global Crossing is a front runner in innovation which requires management to have strong leadership skills. Although managers and leaders are different this organization effectively combines the two out of necessity and effectiveness.
These days it is imperative for a manager to also be a leader. Innovation and effectiveness call for managers to be flexible and able to promote change. Managers who do not become strong leaders will not be able to adapt and thrive. These managers will not have a vision of the future and the opportunities available (Bateman & Snell, 2009). Leadership skills are necessary in management because technological advances and competition are increasing due to globalization. For managers to have the most productive impact in today’s business environment they must be able to be a manager and leader. Globalization has caused managers to have to increase the versatility, skill, and knowledge.
Globalization and management across borders has had a heavy impact on Global Crossing. This company has been positively affected by globalization in several ways. Globalization has caused this organization to be able to expand their customer base world wide. It has also caused this company to create relationships with many other countries (Global Crossing, 2010). Globalization has led to many employees being transferred or hired in other countries. Global Crossing has many locations in Europe, Asia, North America, the United Kingdom, and Latin America (Global Crossing, 2010).
Globalization has played a key role in the success of this organization. Global Crossing has utilized globalization in order to increase “the company’s goal of maximizing opportunities” and create an outsourcing program to make this possible (Global Crossing, 2010, Para. 3). Globalization provides many companies with competition, but Global Crossing has roots in many countries. The strategic value of this company is increased by its relationships with many countries (Bateman & Snell, 2009). This organization has been on the forefront of globalization for years, and it uses this new environment effectively and beneficially.
Organizational culture is a reflection of the shared goals, values, and beliefs of an organization (Bateman & Snell, 2009). Managers and leaders play a role and are responsible for creating and maintaining a healthy organizational culture. Innovation, ethics, and customer service are held highly at Global Crossing (Global Crossing, 2010). Managers and leaders promote these cultural values throughout this organization by constant reinforcement and creating personal examples. The members of the leadership team at Global Crossing are very active in innovation, ethics, and customer service, and they have been working in this field for many years (Global Crossing, 2010). It is important for managers and leaders to create and maintain a healthy organizational culture through personal actions.
Organizational managers and leaders can create and maintain a healthy organizational culture through the use of communication. Managers and leaders must communicate with employees constantly in order to promote a healthy organizational culture. Managers and leaders who interact with employees can reinforce and expand enthusiasm towards the culture of an organization (Bateman & Snell, 2009). Communication is invaluable to maintaining and creating a healthy organizational culture because it allows employees to discuss and interact in order to understand and become involved in the values and beliefs of an organization.
Presentation of values and vision of an organization is another way managers can create and maintain a healthy cultural environment. Cultural values and beliefs of a company should be presented in relation to goals regularly to encourage interest and involvement in an organization’s culture (Bateman & Snell, 2009). In order to ensure that values are presented managers and leaders must relate goals to the vision held by the organization. It is important to encourage employees to work toward a goal that benefits the vision of a company, and this will create and maintain a healthy organizational culture.
Setting an example is another way managers and leaders can create and maintain a healthy cultural environment. If a manager or leader stands up for and exhibits the values of an organization this will show through to employees. A manager or leader who sets an example of integrity that follows the vision of the company is more likely to inspire employees to act in a similar manner. If a manager or leader wants to gain the trust and loyalty of an employee the manager or leader must lead by example. A manager who wants to promote organizational culture must represent the values and vision of the company by personifying these values.
Praise and rewards are also a way to create and maintain a healthy cultural environment in an organization. If employees who exhibit the values of an organization are praised and reward others will follow (Bateman & Snell, 2009). Global Crossing provides their employees with several forms of rewards and incentives (Global Crossing, 2010). This positive reinforcement shows employees that you share the same values for the company (Bateman & Snell, 2009). Incentives are a good way of encouraging the values and beliefs of an organization because it will offer employees a chance for reward and recognition. This strategy is efficient and beneficial because it inspires employees to work for the benefit of a company and themselves.
Management and leadership are not always the same, but the current business climate requires management to provide leadership (Bateman & Snell, 2009). Globalization causes organizations to need innovation, and this requires leadership. Global crossing has been able to combine leadership with management to become a leader in the global business market. This organization provides strong encouragement of organizational culture amongst employees. The utilization of rewards, setting an example, and reinforcement of vision are all beneficial ways to encourage a healthy organizational culture. Global Crossing is successful because of their combination of management and leadership, global relationships, and the shared value of their employees.
