Dyslexia is a disorder that causes those affected by it to have a difficult time with nearly everything they do. Letters and numbers get turned around in their minds. For instance, if it is supposed to read 1789, the dyslexic person will see and write it as 1879. This can have a major effect on the work that he/she is trying to do. That is why being dyslexic can be viewed as a major handicap in the business world. Is it possible that someone with dyslexia could get their problem under control? It is very possible.
Dyslexic people can be a huge asset to your company. There is no reason that a company cannot hire someone who has this problem. Dyslexia can work in the workplace if given the proper attention. It does take a lot of work to get Dyslexia under control. Someone that has this problem does have a handicap that can create major problems for them and any company that they work for.
Here is how to make Dyslexia work in the workplace:
It is very difficult for someone with Dyslexia to keep things organized. Their belongings are often scattered and crumpled on their desk. Nothing makes sense to them and it certainly won’t make sense to anyone else. It is hard for someone with dyslexia to become organized because they are often frustrated. It isn’t impossible though. If you are dyslexic, you have to learn discipline in order to make it work in the workplace. Purchase folders to keep everything in. Organize paperwork as you go along. Don’t put it aside for later. Finish what you started. Never leave work for later. Staying organized is one of the main ingredients to making Dyslexia work in the workplace.
Always triple check your work. Never think you are finished your work until you have done so. If something seems off but you can’t seem to find it, keep looking or have someone else check it for you. Sometimes it takes a second pair of eyes to see where a problem is. Even when you double check, things can get missed. Always triple check to be sure. It doesn’t take as long as you think it does either. It is better to triple check just in case. The results of putting the work through without checking it can be disastrous.
Slow down a little bit while you are working. You will catch the mistakes while you are working which can save a great deal of time later. You won’t have to try to figure out where the mistake is, you have already caught and corrected it. That doesn’t mean that you have to slow down to the point of not being able to get your work done. Slowing down will make your brain work a little differently than it would if you were trying speed through it. When you speed through work, your brain is working at a different rate than the rest of your body. Slow down your brain so that your body can catch up with it.
Sometimes it just takes a little bit of teamwork to get Dyslexia to work in the workplace. Co-workers are often willing to help someone who is having a problem. Remember that it isn’t just people with Dyslexia who make errors. If you are dyslexic, you may think that every time something goes wrong, it has to do with your disability. That just isn’t the case. Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it. Teamwork will get you through just like it gets others through who don’t have the same problem. Count on your co-workers to help you make dyslexia work in the workplace.
Dyslexia can definitely cause problems for people who suffer from it. It can also wreak havoc on the workplace. The most important thing that you have to remember is that you have to work harder and will always have to work harder to achieve the same things that come easy to others. That doesn’t mean that you can’t achieve the goal. Don’t give up. You can make dyslexia work in the workplace even if it is hard to do.
