Why not make it a family movie night? There are some enjoyable movies out there for kids and their parents to see together. Here’s a short list of some movies your family might enjoy together.
The Pacifier (2005) – Starring Vin Diesel, Brittany Snow and Lauren Graham – Vin Diesel plays a Navy Seal who has to guard a scientist’s family home while the mother goes off to find a safety deposit box that belonged to her husband. Not to mention there are several kids ranging from teenagers to a baby to take care. Vin Diesel has a no nonsense attitude with the kids and that’s what makes it funny. It is rated PG.
Cheaper By The Dozen 2 (2005) – Starring Steve Martin, Bonnie Hunt and Eugene Levy – This is part two of Cheaper By The Dozen and the family decides to go camping to a favorite spot of theirs. Tom (Steve Martin) renews his rivalry with Jimmy Murtaugh (Eugene Levy) right of the bat. The two of them battling to be the best is what makes the movie. I did not include the first movie in this series because it was a little too over the top with the kids’ antics for my family. This movie had some of that, but was more about the two dads competing; which was very funny. It has a PG rating.
Beverly Hills Chihuahua (2008) – The voices of Drew Barrymore and George Lopez and actors Jamie Lee Curtis and Piper Perabo – Yes, the animals talk, but it is a very tongue-in-cheek comedy. Rachel (Piper Perabo) loses her aunt’s (Jamie Lee Curtis) dog, Chloe (Drew Barrymore). Chloe is a very pampered high maintenance dog who gets dog-napped in Mexico. She finds protection from a German Shepherd while trying to get out of trouble. This is an amusing comedy sure to please the whole family. It is rated PG.
Charlotte’s Web (2006) – Starring Dakota Fanning and the voice of Julia Roberts – Dakota Fanning plays Fern, a young farm girl, who saves a runt pig she names Wilbur. Wilbur develops an unlikely friendship with a spider (Julia Roberts) who saves him from the “smoke house” by weaving praise-worthy words in her webs. This turns the Zimmerman farm into a tourist attraction and ultimately saves Wilbur. This movie is rated G.
Night At The Museum (2006) – Starring Ben Stiller and Robin Williams – Ben Stiller plays a night watchman by the name of Larry Daley. What he is not told before he starts this job, is that the exhibits come to life at night due to pharaoh’s tablet. Larry meets notable people from history, such as Teddy Roosevelt (Robin Williams), T-Rex and Pocahontas. When chaos breaks out Larry must find a way to control it and become a hero for his son. It is rated PG. There is a sequel to this movie now out.
Chipmunks The Movie (2007) – Starring Jason Lee and the voices of Justin Long, Jesse McCartney and Matthew Gray Gubler – Jason Lee plays Dave Seville, a flailing musician, who finds three young Chipmunks that can sing. Although Dave questions his sanity he puts together a song and lets his old friend and record label mogul Ian (David Cross) listen. Ian soon begins exploiting the Chipmunks for personal gain and Dave must fight to get his “family” back. It is a very comical film with some catchy Chipmunk songs, new and old, that are enjoyable. It is rated PG.
Chipmunks The Squeakquel (2009) – Starring Zachary Levi, the same voices for the Chipmunks as the first movie and the voices of Anna Faris, Christina Applegate and Amy Poehler as the Chipettes. Dave Seville (Jason Lee) has an accident in this movie and his cousin, Toby (Zachary Levi) winds up in charge of the Chipmunks as they venture off to school for the first time. The school’s music program is about to be shut down due to lack of funds and the Chipmunks find themselves in the competition that could save the program. Along the way they encounter the female Chipettes who are seeking their own singing stardom. The Chipettes are being controlled by the evil Ian (David Cross) which causes some problems for the Chipmunks and the Chipettes. The music is very appealing and with cute characters and lots of comedy this is a hit for families. The rating is PG.
Kindergarten Cop (1990) – Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Penelope Ann Miller – Arnold plays an undercover cop who is trying to locate a little boy and his mother. This leads him to a small town where he must pose as a kindergarten teacher. Seeing Arnold play the part of a kindergarten teacher and dealing with all the kids is hilarious. The rating is PG-13 due the some violence so it may not be suitable for smaller children.
Cats And Dogs (2001) – Starring Jeff Goldblum and Elizabeth Perkins – In this movie cats are fighting for global-domination over dogs. Professor Brody (Jeff Goldblum) is about to discover a cure for human allergies to dogs and the cats are trying to stop this from happening. This is a light-hearted comedy with lots of special effects and talking animals. The sequel to this movie was just out in theaters. The rating of this movie is PG.
