Major Players in Shrek Forever After

by itchyfish

The Shrek movie franchise concludes on May 21, 2010, with the release of Shrek Forever After in 3-D. There are many returning characters and voices from the original movie that are still here as well as some new faces and new villains. Here are some significant dramatis personae for Shrek Forever After that will send the franchise off into the sunset.

Shrek

The titular ogre is back but he starts out being bored and unhappy in the beginning of the film. Instead of his old life of scaring villagers and making them run away, mobs now approach the lovable guy to autograph their pitchforks and torches. Shrek now longs for his life in the swamp and taking mud baths instead of being in the court of the King and Queen.

Despite Fiona being happy and the triplets being a handful Shrek still longs for adventure. When he signs a contract with Rumpelstiltskin he gets more than bargains for. Sent back in time to an alternate reality where Shrek and Fiona didn’t fall in love Shrek must battle for his kingdom and win the heart of Fiona a second time to make the contract null and void.

Ogres in this universe are hunted and captured, Rumpelstiltskin in king and with an army of witches, and suddenly his domestic life doesn’t seem so bad. When he tries to enlist the help of Donkey and Puss in Boots they too have fallen into hard times and it’s up to Shrek to make things right.

Fiona

Princess Fiona is a happy mother of three ogre triplets and is living out her dream life of being a wife and having her friends and family around her. But her husband seems to be out of sorts and before she realizes this it’s too late.

In an alternate reality created by Shrek’s own insecurities, Fiona leads the ogre resistance against evil King Rumpelstiltskin and has an army to take into battle against the king’s cadre of flying witches.

When Shrek meets up with her in this new timeline he must convince her that the way to win is by infiltrating Rumpelstiltskin’s castle with the help of Donkey, Puss in Boots, and Dragon instead of an all-out assault. Fiona puts her life in Shrek’s hands and they fall in love again to make things right, realizing that the key to saving her kingdom is in the feelings she has for Shrek instead of the army she commands.

Puss in Boots

The wily swordsman from the second and third films returns to Shrek Forever After in the form of a fat and pampered cat who lives as someone’s pet in the ogre kingdom. Instead of wielding a sword, Puss now has a fluffy color and gem encrusted milk bowl from which he shares his spoils with a mouse.

Puss is now living large in more ways than one and has a reputation for being a sloth like chubby kitty that can’t even touch his toes or lick his own butt. Unless the activity involves eating, sleeping, more eating, and more sleeping Puss could care less in this weird alternate reality.

But Shrek knows that he has the potential for greatness and takes him along on another adventure to save Far, Far Away and help him to fall in love with Fiona all over again. Instead of flying past witches to get to the castle, Shrek realizes with the help of Puss that love is all he ever needs to be happy.
