Lost season 6 episode 14, entitled The Candidate, aired Tuesday evening on ABC. This latest installment in the hit drama’s final chapter further propelled viewers toward the upcoming series finale with a focus on the relationship between John Locke / Faux Locke and Jack. Here’s a full recap.
Lost season 6 episode 14 opens in the alternate reality with Jack talking with Locke in a hospital room shortly after surgery. Jack explains what happened, and asks him about the original injury that put him into a wheelchair. He tells Locke that he may be “a candidate” for a new surgery that could help him to walk again. Locke tells him no thanks, and Jack persists, but John again turns him down. Helen enters the room and thanks Jack for saving Locke.
In the Island reality, it’s dark. Jack wakes up in a boat on a beach, and is greeted by Sayid, who welcomes him to Hydra Island. Elsewhere on the Island, Hurley, Sawyer, Sun and Jin, Kate and the others captured by Zoe and her goons are ushered into cages. Sawyer steals a gun from a goon, and then Widmore shows up and tells him to drop it or he’ll kill Kate because her name doesn’t appear on his list. He complies, and Widmore tells them he’s holding them captive for their own good. He’s stressed over something, and bemoans that “he’s coming” as he hurries his henchmen to action.
In the alternate reality on Lost season 6 episode 14, Jack approaches a man drilling tooth impressions. It’s Bernard. Jack tells Bernard that he wants to see John Locke’s patient file, because he wants to know how he’d sustained his injury. Bernard asks why, and Jack says it’s because they were on the same flight. Bernard nods, and says that he’d been on the flight as well. It was weird. He says he can’t compromise confidentiality, but tells gives him the name Anthony Cooper on a piece of paper and says that man was in the accident with Locke.
On the Island, Jack and Sayid talk. Faux Locke approaches and tells them that they need to get to work to free Jack’s captured friends; Widmore has them. Faux Locke needs Jack’s help to convince his friends that they should trust him, and when Jack asks why, he says it’s because he could kill them all at any time and hasn’t yet done so. He again asks for help, and Jack just looks at him.
Elsewhere on the Island, Sawyer and Kate pace in their cage. Sawyer tells Kate that her name had been crossed off the list that he saw, and tells her that “he doesn’t need” her. In another cage, Jin and Sun get reacquainted talking about their daughter. Sun puts her wedding ring back on and it’s a very sweet moment until the power suddenly goes out. The guards freak out as the Black Smoke filters through and knocks them over. Kate reaches for the guard’s key while Lepidas tries to kick his way out. Jack suddenly shows up and grabs the key, and lets them all out. Kate asks what he’s doing there, and Jack gestures to the forest and says “I’m with him”.
Now daylight on the Island, Jack, Lepidas, Kate, Sun, Jin, Sawyer and Hurley move through the forest toward the plane. Jack tells them that he’s not going with them. Sayid shows up and tells them that Locke is waiting for him.
In the alternate reality, Jack visits a nursing home in search of Anthony Cooper. Helen shows up and begs him to leave well enough alone, and Jack tells her he can’t. Moments later, Helen greets an apparently catatonic man in a wheelchair and introduces him as John’s father.
Faux Locke approaches the Al Jazira airliner, killing two men who try to get him to stop. He goes inside te plane and notes a wire along the ceiling. He opens an overhead bin and pulls something out. Outside, the group appears and Lepidas plans to get the plane ready to go. Sayid notes that the dead man’s neck had been broken, and Faux Locke tells him that he broke the man’s neck. He says that Widmore knew he’d do it. He pulls out a bomb he’d found on the plane and tells them that Widmore booby trapped it. Faux Locke tells them that they need to take the sub. Hurley protests, but Sawyer says he’d been wrong about Locke. Jack says he’ll go with them, but won’t leave the Island. Faux Locke says okay. Sawyer quietly asks Jack to keep Faux Locke from getting on the sub.
Back in the alternate reality on Lost season 6 episode 14, Jack stands by Locke’s hospital bed. Locke appears to be asleep, and mutters “push the button; I wish you had believed me”. Claire summons Jack from the hallway and asks to talk. She pulls out a pretty wooden box that their father had left to her, and she asks if he knew anything about it. Jack says no. She asks how he died, and Jack says in an alley outside a bar. They realize they’d both been on the same flight; Oceanic 815. Jack asks to see the box; he opens it and music plays, but there’s no flash of inspiration. He asks where she’s staying, and offers to let her stay with him. She protests, but he says they’re family.
On the Island, Faux Locke, Jack and crew approach the sub. Sawyer formulates an aggressive plan of approach and attack, and asks Jack and Faux Locke to have their backs. Sawyer, Lepidas, Sun, Jin and Hurley approach the sub; Sawyer and Lepidas enter. The two men begin to take control. Everyone but Jack and Faux Locke approach the sub; as they do so, Faux Locke once again tries to get Jack to go along for the ride. Jack tells him that John Locke told him to stay, and then knocks FL into the water. A gunfight ensues. Kate is shot. Faux Locke climbs out of the water and begins shooting. Jack takes Kate inside the sub and Sawyer locks down and tells Lepidas to dive.
Claire is still on the dock; FL sits with her and tells her it’s okay because she doesn’t want to be on the sub. Inside, Jack finds the explosive from the plane in a backpack as he tries to find first aid supplies for Kate. They have 3:50 to get off the sub. Jack tells them they need to get to the surface; Jin calls Lepidas and tells him to do it now. Sayid looks at the bomb and tries to figure out how to take it apart. Jack tells them to stop; Faux Locke cannot kill them. The others are surprised, but Sawyer is most panicked. He pulls the wires out quickly and it stops for a moment, but then starts counting down at double time. Sayid tells Jack about Desmond in the well, and when Jack asks why he’s telling him this, Sayid says he’s going to need Des because “it’s going to be you, Jack”. Sayid runs off with the bomb and it explodes. The sub begins to fill with water. Jack grabs Kate as the boat fills, and tells Hurley to get Kate out. Hurley tries to go back for Sayid, but Jack tells them “there is no Sayid”. Sun, meanwhile, is trapped and the others struggle to free her. A falling beam knocks out Sawyer and they continue to try to free Sun. Sun tells Jin to go and save himself, but he refuses. Jin tells Jack to go and save Sawyer, so he reluctantly leaves. Sun begs Jin to leave, but he refuses, and again plunges underwater to try to save her. She again begs him to leave, and he again refuses. They tearfully kiss as the sub continues to fill with water. Moments later, they’re shown underwater holding hands, until their hands slip apart.
In the alternate reality on Lost season 6 episode 14, an orderly wheels Locke into the hallway. John tells him that his fiance would be meeting him. Jack meets him in the hall and says good-bye. He tells Locke that he went to see his father to find out why he didn’t want the surgery. Locke tells him that he’d been involved in a plane crash as a pilot, and he clearly blames himself for everything. Jack recalls the moment at the airport when Locke had pointed out that his father was gone, and says the same thing to John about his own dad. Jack tells him to let it go, but John just laughs a little says says good-bye. Jack calls after him again offering help, and John pauses, but wheels away.
On the Island, John pulls Sawyer to the shore. It’s again dark outside. Hurley and Kate approach. Kate asks about Jin and Sun, and Jack simply shakes his head, reducing Kate and Hurley to tears. Jack wanders back toward the water and looks up at the sky in apparent despair. Meanwhile, Faux Locke and Claire sit watching the water elsewhere. FL tells Claire that the sub sunk, and Claire is alarmed; FL tells her that they’re not all dead. He heads off “to finish what he started”.
The drama and the body count on Lost season 6 are definitely rising by the week. It was heartbreaking to see parents Jin and Sun go down in such a horrible way, just as it was awful to see Charlie go down in similiar fashion. We can also presume Lepidas’ death; he was, after all, unconscious as water filled the sub. Why did Jack help Faux Locke/the Black Smoke/the bad dude break his friends out of Widmore’s camp? Don’t get that one. So what’s next? Beats me.
