I admit it. I have puny eyelashes. Worse yet, they get punier with each passing year. Aging just isn’t much fun.
Because of my puny lashes, I’m always on the look out for a mascara that can deliver bigger, fuller, more voluminous lashes. I have found a few along the way but I still keep looking for the “one”.
My most recent find is L’Oreal’s Extra Volume Collagen Mascara. Is it good? Yes, it is. Is it great? Unfortunately, I don’t think so but reviews among my family, friends, and online cosmetic gurus are somewhat mixed.
According to claims, this mascara gives lashes up to 12 times more volume than other brands. I think that is where L’Oreal’s claims fall short. This mascara does add volume and it does it better than many of its competitors but it does not go 12 times further. If you are expecting that, then you are likely to be disappointed.
To get any kind of dense volume, you have to coat, recoat, and then coat your lashes over and over again. The end result is clumpy, spidery looking lashes that not only look fake, but feel horrible. That simply isn’t what most women are looking for. And there really is no need to make false claims. The mascara provides sufficient drama on its own in just one or two easy coats.
The mascara applies beautifully and it doesn’t smear like so many other products on the market. What you put on your lashes, stays on your lashes as long as you do not over coat them.
Part of this is due to the brush included with the product. It s double the thickness of most leading mascara brushes. Therefore, it holds more mascara and easily sweeps the same onto the lashes. However, it is also responsible for clumping if the product is applied too thick and too quick. It is important to follow the product’s directions explicitly and to allow each coat to dry before applying another.
The unique aspect of L’Oreal’s Extra Volume Collagen Mascara is the hydra collagen, which supposedly treats the lashes and prepares them to remain soft, supple, and smooth. Does it work? That is hard to tell. I didn’t see much difference after one application but it is possible that it requires several before that is noticed.
The mascara comes in three shades:
** black brown,
** black and
** blackest black.
I still haven’t figured out how black gets blacker, especially since I don’t see any noticeable difference in shade between the black and the blackest black. However, perhaps it is there to the trained eye.
L’Oreal’s Extra Volume Collagen Mascara can be found anywhere L’Oreal products are sold. That traditionally includes beauty boutiques like Ulta, discount department stores like Target, drug stores like CVS and some grocery marts. It retails for around $8, depending upon where it is purchased.
I like this mascara well enough but I don’t love it. I’m returning to L’Oreal’s Voluminous Mascara, which I consider far superior. However, I guess it is all a matter of personal taste.
Here is my summary review:
Ease of application: 5 stars. It glides on easily and smoothly.
Packaging: 5 stars. It comes in a classic black tube that is sophisticated and chic.
Ease of storage: 4 stars. It is a bit large to fit easily into traditional cosmetic cases and storage cabinets as well as small clutch bags and purses.
Ease of purchase: 5 stars. L’Oreal products can be found easily at various typical shopping locations.
Price: 5 stars. It retails for under $8, which is about the same as other comparable mascara.
Effectiveness: 4 stars. It works if you don’t over apply; however, I still prefer L’Oreal’s Voluminous Mascara to this one.
Variety: 3 stars. It only comes in three so-called shades. In reality it is just two – brown and black. It needs to be produced in navy, deep green and dark plum as well.
Claim accuracy: 3 stars. It delivers on some of its promise. It volumizes with ease. It does not; however, volumize 12 times.
Product purchase probability: 2 stars. I’m not likely to buy this mascara again unless it gets very cheap; like $1.
Retailer purchase probability: 5 stars. I got mine at Wal-Mart where I shop constantly so it is the perfect place for me to make a purchase.
Final rating: 4.1 stars. And that is pushing it to the max.
5 stars – outstanding
4 stars – good
3 stars – average
2 stars – below average
1 star – poor
