Logitech best known for their keyboards, mouse controllers and video game peripherals is stepping into the video home security market with a rather ingenious product. The Logitech Alert Digital Video Security system available this August for around $400 depending on the model, allows anyone to simply install the Logitech software to their computer, connect to their network, and plug-in the cameras into regular wall outlets or spliced into existing wiring for power.
Not only is the process simple, but once installed you can view the images from your camera(s) on any number of mobile devices or anywhere in the world from a web browser on any secured computer. This is great news for families with babies or especially during these tough economic times and the upswing in robberies, the Logitech Alert makes for a great security device, just in case an opportunistic thief is scoping out your neighborhood.
The Logitech Alert also comes in two forms, the Logitech Alert 750i ($299) Master System for inside the house, and the Logitech Alert 750e Outdoor Master System ($399).
The initial system comes with one HD camera that records at 720p and includes a 130 degree lens to help give you a better view of the area. The outdoor cameras are weatherproof and also have HD night-vision capabilities. The cameras are also motioned-triggered and include a built in DVR to store up to two gigs of footage that you can dump to your computers hard drive if necessary. Each system can handle up to six cameras all together, additional cameras can be purchased individually as you see fit, and when combined with other cameras the Logitech Alert system is one robust video surveillance system that can easily cover the perimeter of most homes.
The actual applicable uses for this kind of multi-camera set-up for less than $1000 is endless and could lead to some innovative Indie movies in the future, or some elaborated YouTube videos or America’s Funniest Home Videos. Being able to control and switch from camera to camera when away from the house is also great for pet owners, and will give you the ability to outthink a roving dog or clumsy cat.
Although the price for the Logitech Alert video security system is a bit of an investment, especially if you expand the system to include multiple cameras and Web Alert automated services from Logitech, I think the long term value of such a robust easy to install video surveillance system will pay off in the long run.
