Lindsay Lohan was pretty confident she would not receive any jail time at her July 6th hearing, but apparently she was wrong. Superior Judge Marsha Revel sentenced the starlet to 90 days jail time for violating probation after a drug and DUI arrest back in 2007. Revel also added a 90 day in-patient drug rehabilitation program set to begin after Lohan completes jail time.
Since her 2007 arrest Lohan has repeated missed court dates, skipped out on court-ordered alcohol classes and rehabilitation, failed to submit to drug tests and violated her probation in multiple ways. The actress has offered a myriad of ‘reasons’ for missing court dates and other court-mandated appointments and programs.
The original case involved Lindsay pleading guilty to using cocaine, driving with a blood alcohol level above the legal limit and reckless driving. She was given three years of probation but asked for a year long extension when she didn’t complete her court-ordered alcohol education classes. Lindsay was required to wear an alcohol monitoring ankle bracelet and while attending a party the monitoring went off, alerting authorities of an alcohol violation. Though, Lohan still denies drinking that night.
At the hearing Lindsay told the judge, “As far as I know I was in compliance with my program…I wasn’t expecting any special treatment aside from the understanding that I have to provide for myself, I have to work.” Witnesses say Lohan broke into sobs when the judge ruled on her sentence. Lohan’s jail time is scheduled to begin on July 20th, 2010. Lindsay’s sister and father also attended the hearing with her.
Judge Marsha Revel said, “She knew [the prosecutor] would be asking for jail time and yet still after all that, she didn’t comply with the court order.” The judge threw out the alcohol monitoring bracelet evidence, but apparently there was more than enough to convict without it. Judge Revel also likened Lindsay to “someone who cheats but doesn’t think it’s cheating if they don’t get caught.”
Lohan’s lack of respect for the law and court system has been evident for quite a while now. The amount of time, money and effort that our court system has had to give to this one celebrity’s case is sickening and ridiculous. Cases can be resolved much faster when the defendant shows up to court and complies with laws and sentencing.
After the train wreck that has become Lindsay Lohan, many observers feel it’s about time the actress got some type of jail time. Who knows how long she’ll actually serve, though. And of course we can expect a Paris Hilton-esque red carpet walk when she is released.
Upon hearing the news, So You Think You Can Dance judge Adam Shankman tweeted, “Wow! Lindsay Lohan going to jail AND sentenced to rehab. This could save her life.”
