Lindsay Lohan — after being dumped by her attorney after her shocking and immature display of pique during her last courtroom appearance, when she was photographed with “F–k You” painted on the nails of her middle fingers — has been dumped by her new attorney, Los Angeles defense lawyer Robert Shapiro.
LiLo is scheduled to surrender and begin her 90-day jail sentence on Tuesday, July 20th. Shapiro was expected to be in court as her counsel.
The fact that Shapiro, most famous for assembling the O.J. Simpson “Dream Team” defense counsel that kept the football legend out of the gas chamber, has terminated his representation of Lohan may mean he feels she is not committed to sobriety. Before Shapiro took on LiLo, another big gun lawyer had turned her down, complaining that she lived in a “fantasy world.”
When Shapiro announced his acceptance of LiLo as a client, he said he took on her case on the condition that she serve out her 90-day sentence, obey the terms of her parole, and get treatment for her substance abuse problems. Lohan began staying at a sober-living facility that was founded by Shapiro. Now, according to news reports, Shapiro — after filing the paperwork with California Superior Court Judge Martha Revel last week to represent LiLo — apparently terminated their professional relationship on Monday, July 19th.
When reached by the Web site Access Hollywood, Shapiro refused to comment on the report that he had just quit.
Dumped By Her Original Attorney
Lindsay Lohan’s original attorney Shawn Chapman Holley terminated his relationship with the troubled movie actress after photographs and video recordings of her obscene fingernail message at her sentencing hearing caused a media frenzy. Judge Revel could find LiLo in contempt of court for wearing such a provocative message into her court. Lojan’s attorney apparently had had enough.
Apparently, no local counsel initially would take her on, apparently as they did not want to antagonize the bar and jeopardize their relationships with judges who might be hostile to Lohan after her calculated insult to one of their brethren. Shapiro, known as a fixer, wouldn’t be bothered. He is not that kind of attorney.
LiLo and her mother went as far as Chicago seeking legal representation. The attorney Stuart V. Goldberg flew into Los Angeles to consult with Lohan, her family, and her professional retainers. Eventually, he refused to take on her case because she failed to see the seriousness of her predicament. Goldberg claimed LiLo lived in a fantasy world.
Sources said that Lohan’s manager balked at his high fee while LiLo reportedly had a personality clash with Goldberg. Goldberg publicly described LiLo as a “fragile lost child” in his public announcement that he wasn’t taking Lohan on as a client, according to MTV.
Represents Famous Drunk Drivers
Robert Shapiro first made his name defending legendary lawyer F. Lee Bailey on drunk driving charges. He got Bailey off by portraying the arresting officer as an angry cop who hated lawyers. Bailey would later use the same trick to reveal Mark Fuhrman as a racist at the O.J. Simpson trial, which helped him get out of a murder rap. Simpson later was convicted of unjustly killing Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend at a civil trial. He was not represented by any of the dream team.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the celebrity TV program, Shapiro said that he agreed to become LiLo’s attorney “on the condition that she complies with all of the terms of her probation, including a requirement of jail time that was imposed by Judge Marsha Revel.”
Shapiro went on to claim that Lohan was afflicted by “a disease that I am all too familiar with. Hopefully, I can be of assistance to Ms. Lohan and Judge Revel in implementing a treatment approach recommended by medical professionals for Ms. Lohan’s long-term recovery and sobriety.”
The lawyer’s own son died of a drug overdose. On Tuesday, July 15th, LiLo began sobriety treatment at Pickford Lofts, a Los Angeles-based sober-living facility that Shapiro founded.
The actress was upbeat about her upcoming incarceration, tweeting her fans, “the only ‘bookings’ that i’m familiar with are Disney Films, never thought that i’d be ‘booking’ into Jail… eeeks.”
Lohan, who was arrested twice in 2007 for driving under the influence, was sentenced to three consecutive 30-day jail terms for violating her parole.
