Lindsay Lohan’s attorney tried but failed to persuade a Los Angeles judge that a SCRAM bracelet will clash horribly with Lindsay’s look on an upcoming Texas photo shoot. Judge Marsha Revel was having none of the young star’s manipulation. When Lohan’s lawyer suggested that the random drug testing could be undertaken in Texas, the judge balked, telling him that the drug testing would be done in LA and the photo shoot would have to be postponed, the New York Daily News reported.
Lohan missed a mandatory court appearance last week and postponed scheduled court-ordered classes, claiming she was stranded in France after the theft of her passport. This did not set well with Judge Revel who noted Lohan’s history of blowing off court-ordered sessions.
That a control battle was raging between the court and Lohan that extends beyond the wearing of an unsightly SCRAM bracelet on her ankle became even more apparent when Lohan’s attorney indicated that Lohan would face her responsibilities with renewed vigor, attending addiction classes daily rather than weekly. The judge admonished Lohan and her counsel that the court order was weekly attendance and the terms of the court order determine Lohan’s compliance.
Lohan’s reported eye rolling while caucusing with her attorney about the judge’s mandate probably did not help her effort to have the SCRAM bracelet requirement amended.
SCRAM bracelets are increasingly being required of DUI offenders. The acronym SCRAM stands for Secure Continuous Remote Alcohol Monitor. Lindsay Lohan will be in the company of 4,000 offenders who wear a SCRAM bracelet each day for hourly monitoring of the presence of alcohol in their blood. 750 courts and agencies in 40 states use SCRAM bracelets to monitor sobriety among DUI offenders.
One study on the efficacy of SCRAM bracelets noted that SCRAM wearers are less likely to repeat their offenses in the short term but more likely than the control group to do so after 3.4 years have elapsed. Offenders who wear SCRAM bracelets for at least 90 days and who have at least 2 prior DUI offenses are the group most likely to benefit from wearing the device- a group that would seem to include Lindsay Lohan.
Lohan is not the first Hollywood star ordered to wear a SCRAM bracelet after being arrested. Radar Online created a photo gallery of stars known to have worn SCRAM bracelets. These include Michael Vick, Andy Dick, Eve, Michelle Rodriguez, Nicole Richie, Pamela Bach, Tracy Morgan- and Lindsay herself back when she was arrested twice for DUI in 2007 and required to wear a SCRAM bracelet both times. By now, Lindsay should have enough experience with the SCRAM bracelet to have figure out how to use it to accessorize her wardrobe.
