The prosthetic industry is booming with new and innovative technologies that are changing the lives of thousands of people. This is a business that exists mainly out of necessity. People are born without their limbs or have them amputated later in life. The loss of one of your limbs can be a traumatic moment in someone’s life. This is why developing prosthetics is big business. The Limb Hand might be the greatest prosthetic created in the past ten years.
Touch Bionics has worked hard to make the Limb Hand a reality. They have studied large groups of people in study groups to find out what type of prosthetic will be the best for them. The Limb is designed by popular Scottish prosthetics engineer Nick Sement. His invention will become the first hand replacement prosthetic to feature five independently powered fingers. This allows the user the ability to have dozens of different grip patters. These grip patters reflect the ways that people actually use their hands in real life.
The prosthetic hand was tested on a group of patients. Each patient explained how excited they were to be chosen for the studies. The results were all very similar. Patients mentioned how excited they were to be able to move every finger. They mentioned how much of a stress and problem it can be to use hands that only grip and have no finger motion. The finger movement allowed them to experience gripping that is only available to those who actually have hands. Touch Bionics felt that the results were strong enough to market the product to the public.
The motions in the fingers will make it easier to carry a briefcase, pull the sods tab on a can, or grip the steering wheel of a car. This is made possible by the extrudes on our skin. I-Limb will pick up the electrodes from skin on what is left of your arm. The electrodes pick up muscle signals and use them to operate the hand’s robotic controls. Basically, this allows the hand to grip, grab, and band like a real hand. Touch Bionics has created a hand that will offer prosthetic users the hope of living a much more normal life.
My overall opinion of this product is that it is truly amazing. We often take for granted how lucky we are to have all of our limbs attached. Those who have this unfortunate limb loss be a part of their lives need some help. The Limb Hand will give them the helping assist that the greatly need. I am excited about this product development and hope the rest of you are feeling the same way.
