Bipolar Disorder rules the live of millions and many more that have been misdiagnosed or not treated. Many people start their bipolar lives being misdiagnosed at a younger age with severe depression. Unfortunatley the prescription drugs used for depression actually works the opposite in bipolar disorder.
Mania sets in when someone with bipolar is treated with drugs for depression. Many People love being manic because of the euphoria that comes with it. Describing mania is differant for everyone but fast speach, rambligs and jumping from one topic to another without anyone being able to keep up, speeding, shoplifting, risky sex and addiction.
Many people suffering from bipolar will experiance addiction sometime in thier life, alchohol and illegal drugs are often used to help temper the depression and the body pains that mimic flu like symptoms. Being depressed we will retract ourselves and will become paranoid and may even become agoraphobic, rarely leaving our rooms and even more so our homes. The depression cripples us, and leaves us with no need or want to do anything more than lay in bed with the lights out.
The medications avalible and used for bipolar are staggering, I am taking a cocktail of ten differant medications and it has taken six years to get me where I am today. I can say it has been very difficult for my family, having two suicide attemps, and being hospitalized several times and missing my daughter birthday one year. Being bipolar we suffer but those around us suffer also and sometimes more than we do, sometimes while we are depressed we say and do things that cause pain and anguish and we may not know the severity of what we did.
Being bipolar we rotate from being manic to depression, differant people rotate between the two more often than others. Try to imagine being on a roller coaster going up then down, it’s the same princible being bipolar our emotions switch sometimes daily, sometimes hourly and even change with no reason or warning. Family members may not come around as much they may even avoid you. I have had family members suggest that I just need to get out more, this is what I mean by having people not truly understand the disorder.
The disorder is a life long struggle with yourself, it may even seem at times that you have differant personalities and in reality it is almost true you may have differant personalities but not seperate identities. Most family members will understand and even cope with you but sometimes you will have one family member that either thinks they know everything about being bipolar but in fact they are or have been misinformed.
I can say from experiance that being bipolar is a long hard road, you must get a second opinion, the local mental health center is maybe the best place to educate yourself and your family. They will offer meetings for you and you family, counsiling both private and with your spouse and weekly, monthly doctor appointments. This is a great tool to help you learn what if anything may trigger your depression and mania, you will have few moments between your high and low times. These times will make you feel almost normal but they will not last so enjoy them.
When you and your doctor find a cocktail that works for you you may not notice but you will need to rely on family to tell you and the doctor wether or not the medications are having a good effect, bad effect, or nothing at all. I hope this will help you manage what needs to be done if you are bipolar, if you are reading this because you think someone you know maybe bipolar I hope you will use this as basic information and not a medical guide but more as something to help guide you to the right direction.
