Lots of books are made into movies, in fact many movies end up becoming books as well. It seems lately that book based movies are very popular lately at the box office. Not only are movies based on books popular but movies based on comic books are also popular. Just think of some of the top films franchises in recent years such as Harry Potter, The Da Vinci Code, anything by Nicholas Sparks, James Bond, Spider-man, Batman, and the Twilight saga just to name only a few. Unfortunatley there are many good books that should be made into movies that have not been made into movies yet and the following list is my top three books that should be made into movies.
1. Ender Series
I couldn’t wait to say this so instead of saving the best for last I have to say ENDER! Hollywood seems to thank it should be a movie too, but they have not done much about it. Enders Game the first of the Ender books written has been in development hell for years. What is unfortunate is that the author popular science fiction writer Orson Scott Card is not a big fan of books being made to movies and is not likely to push the studios to make Enders Game.
Enders Game would be a great film with today’s technology. The Ender series has a strong following so it has a fan base already set in place. It is a story if people were introduced to it I think many would like especially young kids. Reading so many parts come out at you as great scenes to see, or even better to live in. Of course the most obvious must see scene would be the battles in battle room a zero-g environment where young kids in training fight laser tag games. It may sound a little silly but with the fate of mankind at stake these are no mere games. Having mostly kids would play well to younger audiences. Besides Sci-fi the book has touches of fantasy as Ender plays a game that the adults use to psychologically analyze him, it also features many scenes that would make for great action such short snippets of the earlier wars, and some fights that happen during the course of the story. Ender is one book that is long overdue for the big screen.
2. The Bible
Talking about long overdue movies the Bible has been 2,000 years overdue. While some movies have been made based on the Bible such as The Ten Commandments, and The Passion no one has started at the begging and gone to the end. I am not suggesting that it be done all in one movie but it be done over multiple movies like the next Harry Potter but not two movies for one book more like 10 or maybe more.
Since we are talking books this is the best selling book ever, forget about Harry Potter all the Harry Potter books combined have not sold anywhere near as many copies as the Bible. There is an obvious viewer base here. The stories are good and sometimes obscure. There is tragedy, action, sex, even comedy. You have talking donkeys, guys falling off chairs and dying, and a few more unexpected funny stories. Lets face it the Bible is in many people’s eyes the greatest story ever told, or if you are in Hollywood the greatest story never told.
3. Anything by Ben Mezrich
Ok you probably don’t know who that is but you may know of one of his books that was made into a movie. Ben Mezrich wrote the book that 21 was based on. In reality 21 was much more exciting the movie, it was more involved, had more exotic locals, more action, and more glitz and glamor. The amazing thing about Bens books is that they are based on real events. Sadly not many business related movies have been made you can name the good business movies on your one hand. Ben’s stories are not dry business books either they are often action packed. One of his books the protagonist has to deal with the Yakuza at one point and barley lives to tell the tale. Another book features the protagonist racing through Dubai in a Ferrari. These are stories that people will love of normal people beating the odds and the system and making fortunes doing it. These are real rags to riches stories with an occasional story of a fall from grace such as the story of Nick Lesson who took down Barrings Bank but that is just a side note in a much more exciting story.
I am sure that many other books exist that should be made into movies. If you can think of some good books that would make a good movie just leave a comment.
