I tire of hearing that this president has not shown enough leadership in the BP Oil Spill and I tire of it because leadership is not a commodity which can be measured by what someone does not do. Leadership is about getting things done period. Take for example a battlefield commander. If a battlefield commander is known to kick and scream to get things done, what normally happens to those under their command is the tendency to ignore them as much as possible. It also tends to make those under their command jumpy and agitated which is a bad mix when it comes to making sure that the mission is completed successfully. If this is something many of you can not still understand then let’s use an example of your parents. When did you wish to do the best job possible for them? Was it when they were constantly yelling at you or when they spoke to you in a calm reserved manner? Leadership requires the respect of those under your command to follow those commands unquestioned. Ranting and raving does not produce this result and pushes you to the edge of the opposite end.
Many have said that this president needs to get upset and show more emotion in front of the camera, while that may be good for those calling for it, it may not be the person that this president has fought so hard to become. People speak of how Ronald Regan handled the Air Traffic Controllers but they tend to forget Ronald Regan was an actor. This president is not an actor and must be allowed to handle things in the way he thinks is best. I expected every single flaw of his to be magnified by those who oppose him but it has caught me quite off guard to hear those who voted for him now wishing to make him a puppet.
Opposition complains about his slow reaction to the BP Oil Spill and no one seems to understand that this president weighs his option carefully before jumping in. He does not operate on a knee-jerk reaction which is the same reaction which landed us in two wars. Leadership is confidence and the remembrance that your actions carry with them more than just a popularity vote but the welfare of the whole. If it is your nature to approach things carefully and thoughtfully then that is what one must do. Doing anything else causes one to stop being who they are in order to be someone else and while you are trying to be another, who will be you. This conversation offers another question that has not been asked of those disappointed with this president. If you know what it takes to protect your beaches why have those Mayors and Governors not done anything about it before? If you know that you need 20 boats for skimming and 200 feet of boom, why wasn’t these items purchased before the completion of the first offshore platform or after the first oil spill. Sounds like someone needs to get their own house in order before they began complaining about the home of another.
