Cognitive/Instructional Objectives

a. Students will understand what it means to be a good communicator.

b. Students will learn and become comfortable with using many of the techniques utilized by good communicators.

c. Students will come to understand that not using good observation skills with others can result in you losing friends, potential jobs, and the respect and patience of teachers, parents, and peers.

d. Students will gain an understanding of when it is appropriate to speak and when he or she should be simply listening.

e. Students will understand that it is rude to interrupt others when they are speaking or occupied with activities such as a phone call or a conversation with others.

Emotional Objectives

a. I want people to like and respect me; therefore, I am careful not to interrupt them when they talk.

b. I value and respect other people; therefore, I actively listen to them and demonstrate self-control.

c. I value and respect myself; therefore, I am careful to use good communication skills so that I will look poised and sound good.

d. I value and respect myself and others and wish to have good self control; therefore, I make certain that I use good observation skills with myself and others.

e. I want people to like and respect me; therefore, I control when I speak and when I listen. I also wait my turn to speak.

Behavioral Objectives

a. Students will decrease the number of interruptions they make with teachers, friends, acquaintances, and family members.

b. Students will increase the number of times they make good eye contact with others.

c. Students will increase the number of times they use a large variety of good communication techniques when they talk one-on-one, in front of a group, and in their various other interactions that they have with others.

d. Students will increase the number of times they are more observant of when it is appropriate to speak and when it is appropriate to listen and/or keep quiet.

Glossary of Terms:

Adequate Distance – Adequate Distance refers to that people have their personal boundary space inside of which they don’t want people invading. They want people to keep a comfortable distance from them.

Body Language – Body Language consists of facial expressions and the actions you do with your hands and body to express an emotion.

Don’t Fidget – Don’t Fidget refers to the little actions that people do with their hands or their body that are very distracting. For example, they might play with their hair or jewelry or pick at their clothes. They might scratch their arms or legs or face. they might sway back and forth or rock side to side. These are all fidgeting-type motions.

Eye Contact – Eye Contact is looking other people in the eyes.

Making Good Observations – Noticing when it is appropriate to speak and when you should be simply listening.

Normal Pitch – Normal Pitch refers to that people can speak in a normal tone. When they are not, they are usually speaking in a high falsetto voice or a low, almost masculine-sounding pitch.

Self-Control – To restrain, regulate, and direct oneself to act in ways that you and others feel are appropriate. To exercise authority over one’s own actions, thoughts, and words.

The Way We Talk – The Way We Talk refers to that the flavor or connotation of the words can totally change by the volume , tone of voice, and attitude with which the words are stated.

Valuing & Respecting Others – Feel that other people are full of worth, merit, usefulness, and importance. To hold others in high regard and esteem. To be considerate of others and to show concern for them. To feel other people are worthwhile and that they merit your respect and esteem.

Valuing & Respecting Self – Feel full of worth, merit, usefulness, and importance. To hold oneself in high regard and esteem. To be considerate of one’s self and to show concern for self. To feel one is worth meriting respect & esteem from others. To feel motivated to be good or proper in behavior and to demonstrate conventional conduct.
