When we first got married we purchased a number of “essential” kitchen utensils and supplies that we would need to make some basic meals in our kitchen. As our family grew, as our tastes in meals grew, as our idea about products grew, we quickly realized that many of the things we had purchased cheaply had broken, were about to break, or really didn’t work all that well. One Christmas we bought for each other a number of kitchen utensils that, though pricier, were made to last.
One of the items we purchased was the Leifheit Pro Line Stainless Steel Egg Slicer. Lest you think that we are some egg loving family in this house, we use this slicer for a variety of items in the home – soft fruits and mushrooms especially … anything that we want cut into thin strips quickly.
The Leifheit Pro Line Stainless Steel Egg Slicer is a stainless steel one piece slicer that has hinges to raise and lower the wires that cut the food you choose. The food rests in a scooped out “bowl” area. Once sliced you simply raise back up the wire half and remove the sliced food.

One of the easiest ways to use this slicer is for hardboiled eggs. This is something we try and eat for breakfast at least once a week, and the wires work quickly to cut our cooked eggs into thin slices.
I’ve also used this slicer to slice strawberries that I wanted to use. Though we typically eat strawberries whole, some times we like to slice them into these thin pieces because they are easier to pick up and bite for our toddler.
I think our most used way of using this slicer is for mushrooms. We love sliced mushrooms sauteed over steaks, after having them served in a restaurant one day. We figured we could easily re-create that at home … and thanks to the Leifheit Pro Line Stainless Steel Egg Slicer we did! Whole mushrooms are just the right size, and soft enough, to be cut into fine strips by this slicer.
We’ve had this slicer around 2 years now. It is very heavy and is stored in our utensil drawer. I often think to myself that it would make a nice paperweight in a pinch.Though it claims to be dishwasher safe we don’t have a dishwasher and so have always handwashed this slicer.
It looks as good as new and the wires are still strong. I am impressed that they have not bent, broke or look worn. I think in this case you get what you pay for – and in paying a few dollars more for a higher constructed product we got a longer lasting product, one that we have found we can count on time and time again.
