Legalizing marijuana: Why are people fighting it?
Well, anybody who doesn’t live in a cave probably knows that there’s a lot going on now, more than ever, to legalize marijuana. California is going to be the front-runner in this movement to make pot legal. I wish I hadn’t deleted it, because I was going to quote an article I had received about the movement in Cali, and the numbers they had about how much tax revenue woul be generated if pot became legal. I think it was in the neighborhood of $1.3 Billion, which is more than grapes or the Happy Cows bring in.
What I don’t understand, is why is anyone fighting this? Legalizing marijuana would bring in so much money for the country. And that’s only the tip of the iceberg. Decriminalizing pot would cut down on illegal activity, reduce violence, and more likely than not, over time, reduce the amount of pot smoking. I know some people think that if it’s legal, everyone will be doing it. There was a Cali judge on TV, and he made a great point about that. If pot is legal, it’s going to get boring after the initial shine wears off. It’s like liquor. It’s no big deal to have a drink, because anyone can do it. You’re not cool or special because you can buy a beer. Sure, in the beginning, a lot of people may try it, who were afraid to when it was illegal. That doesn’t mean we’re going to become a nation of stoners. Many people will likely decide it’s just not for them. It’ll be like trying a cigarette. You’ll take a puff or two, like it or not like it, and that’ll be the end of it.
You also need to think about the fact that the US wastes massive resources finding and incarcerating non-violent marijuana “offenders”. These people are usually not hurting anyone. They’re getting high for recreation, or for medical relief. It’s not like they’re putting heroin into the veins of our children. Imagine how much the country would save if they weren’t going after and jailing pot users. There would be more resources to go after more harmful substances like heroin, crack and other very dangerous drugs.
Now I know some people are going to take this leap… If marijuana becomes legal, the next step will be legal cocaine, legal LSD… That’s just stupid. Science has shown that pot is less detrimental to your health than cigarettes, and can have many benefits for people with chronic pain and terminal illness. People who think like that are the same extremists who think making gay marriage legal is going to lead to legalized beastiality and pedophelia. It’s just ridiculous.
I strongly believe that we should all support the lagalization of marijuana. I wouldn’t say it should go so far as to be advertised on billboards like cigarettes (although, how long has it been since you saw a cigarette ad?), but I think it should be legal, and available, and taxed. It would do wonders for the economy, and put a large section of the drug trade out of business. Prohibition has never worked. Check your history. Do you remember what happened when alcohol was illegal? Stop the insanity, and just make weed legal. It’d be a good thing all around.
Here’s to the day when people can smoke a blunt in peace. Cheers!
