LeBron James gave us a snapshot of himself with his one hour “decision” on ESPN this Thursday night. That there may not be a bigger player in sports, and yet there may not be a more egotistical and hated player in sports. LeBron is not your definition of a bad guy. He stays out of trouble, is respectful to his players and coaches, and yet his insensitivity is mind-boggling.
Let me sum up for you what LeBron could of said that would of completely made this situation a lot easier for everyone. It would of only taken five words, “I picked the Miami yet”. Yet, there was so much more hoopla and nonsense that came out of the James’s camp. It reeks of someone that is extremely obsessed with himself. It takes a certain type of person to set up an hour special to announce your leaving your hometown team and subsequently crush the fans of Cleveland. The program started on Thursday at 9pm, or actually around 9:27pm, as “The Decision” was delayed by highlights of “The King” that lasted about 20 minutes until the interview actually began.
The biggest reason I am so disgusted by this, is the effect that this has had on the Cleveland Cavalier fans. I am from South Jersey, and am a die-hard Philadelphia sports fan and have never cheered for another team. I will be the first to say, that the Cleveland Cavaliers are now a team that I will root for. Cleveland natives know what type of person LeBron is, but they put up with it in the hopes they of finally breaking the “Cleveland Curse” and winning a championship. James promised these fans he would not quit until the Cleveland Cavaliers were World Champions. There were rumblings that James quit on his team during the playoffs. Now he has quit on his team and city all together.
Dan Gilbert, owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers, showed his disgust in a letter to the fans. He also showed why he is one of the most-dedicated and passionate owners in sports. This is one thing that the Cavs’ fans should be proud of. Gilbert went on a rampage calling LeBron’s decision ” a cowardly betrayal”, and telling the fans of the Cavs, that they “deserve so much more”. There was also another message Gilbert told the fans: “I PERSONALLY GUARANTEE THAT THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS WILL WIN AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE THE SELF-TITLED FORMER ‘KING’ WINS ONE”. And yes, Gilbert wrote this entire guarantee in capitals.
I may not agree with this guarantee, but it is nice to see a owner feel so much passion for the fans of a city. It shows you that all the owners in sports are not out there for money only, and some do have a conscience. LeBron James may not have made this move for the money, but he sure didn’t have a “conscience” while making all his decisions, this past week.
